Enugu State Expands NG-CARES Intervention to 3,000 Rural Beneficiaries
The Enugu State Government has officially launched a significant expansion of its social intervention program, the Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES), with a clear target of reaching more than 3,000 beneficiaries across various rural communities within the state. This initiative is being spearheaded by the State Community and Social Development Agency (CSDA) and is strategically designed to enhance living conditions at the grassroots level through focused interventions in critical areas such as water supply, sanitation, and support for small-scale enterprises. The expansion aligns directly with Governor Peter Mbah's unwavering commitment to fostering inclusive development and ensuring that economic growth benefits all segments of the population, particularly those in underserved rural areas.
Government Commitment to Rural Development
During the launch event, the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, who represented Governor Mbah, emphasized that this program is a direct and timely response to the challenging economic realities currently affecting rural households. He reiterated the administration's dedication to alleviating hardship and creating expanded opportunities at the community level. Professor Onyia provided detailed explanations of the intervention's components, which include the installation of solar-powered water facilities to significantly improve access to clean and safe drinking water, the construction of modern and hygienic sanitation systems to promote public health, and the provision of both financial and material support to bolster livelihoods and stimulate local economic activity. A key principle of this initiative is the central role of community participation, where local residents will be actively involved in identifying their specific needs and ensuring the effective and transparent execution of projects.
UNESCO Commends Enugu's Smart Schools Initiative
In a related development, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has publicly commended Governor Peter Mbah for what it describes as a transformative and forward-looking Smart Schools initiative. UNESCO has pledged a strategic partnership with Enugu State, focusing on areas such as teacher training, the development of digital education frameworks, and the cultural renaissance of Igbo heritage. This commendation was formally delivered by the Head of the UNESCO Office and Representative in Nigeria, Jean-Paul Ngome Abiaga, during a high-level courtesy visit to the Government House in Enugu on Monday.
Abiaga, leading a distinguished delegation, expressed that the global body is deeply impressed by the scale, speed, and visionary approach underpinning the state's comprehensive education reforms. He noted that UNESCO, which places education at the very core of its global mandate, finds strong alignment between its international objectives and the Enugu State government's aggressive investment in human capital development. This is particularly evident in the ambitious establishment of over 260 Smart Green Schools across the state, a project that aims to revolutionize learning environments and outcomes for future generations.
