Federal Government Initiates 2.5km Rural Road Construction in Enugu State
The Federal Government has officially commenced the construction of a 2.5-kilometre road that will link the communities of Aji, Isiugwu, and Ufodo in the Igboeze North Local Government Area of Enugu State. This significant infrastructure project is designed to enhance rural connectivity and stimulate economic activity in the region, providing improved access to essential services and resources.
Project Details and Progress Update
During an interactive session with journalists at the Federal Character Commission (FCC) headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday, Peter Ogbonna Eze, the Federal Commissioner representing Enugu State at the FCC, disclosed the details of the road project. Eze explained that the initiative, which also connects to neighbouring Kogi State, is expected to facilitate better access to farms, schools, and markets, thereby boosting livelihoods for residents in the affected communities.
According to Eze, the project was initiated through his office but is fully funded by the Federal Government. He provided an update on the construction progress, noting that the first kilometre of the road is nearing completion. Currently, asphalt laying and drainage works are ongoing, with plans to commission this section once the asphalt is fully laid.
"This is a 2.5km road linking three communities, Aji, Isiugwu, and Ufodo. The project is ongoing, and the first kilometre is nearing completion. Once the asphalt is laid, we will move to commission it," Eze stated. He further highlighted that the road will feature asphalt surfacing and double drainage systems to ensure durability and effective water management, which are crucial for maintaining the infrastructure in good condition over time.
Inspiration from State Development Agenda
Eze attributed his motivation to facilitate this project to the infrastructure-focused policies of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah. He emphasized that Governor Mbah's development agenda has inspired federal representatives from the state to actively support ongoing efforts aimed at improving infrastructure. Eze stressed that better roads are central to development, as they enhance access to education, agriculture, and commerce, ultimately improving the quality of life for the people.
"Road is a critical aspect of development. It improves access to farms, schools, and markets, and ultimately enhances the quality of life of the people," he remarked, underscoring the transformative impact of such projects on rural communities.
Federal Scholarship Participation and Compliance
In addition to discussing the road project, Eze addressed other matters related to federal initiatives. He commended the increased engagement from the South-East region in the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) scholarship scheme, describing it as a positive shift from previous years. Eze disclosed that screening exercises for candidates from the region were held at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with some candidates also participating in other zones.
"The South-East is showing more interest in national programmes, and that is a positive development," he noted. Eze further confirmed that oil-producing states in the South-East, including Abia and Imo, continue to receive their statutory allocations in the overseas scholarship scheme, emphasizing that these slots are statutory and not discretionary.
Enforcement of Federal Character Principles
On the enforcement of federal character compliance, Eze issued a warning that the FCC will begin legal action against Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) that violate federal character principles in recruitment and operations. He explained that the commission, under the leadership of its Executive Chairman, Ayo Hulayat Omidiran, has intensified oversight to ensure fairness and equitable representation in public service.
"We have engaged several MDAs, and many are responding positively. However, those who fail to comply will face legal action, as empowered by the Federal Character Act," he added, highlighting the commission's commitment to upholding these principles across all government entities.
