Rivers Governor Fubara Approves N100 Million Relief for Bille Gas Emission Crisis

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has authorized a substantial financial intervention of N100 million for Bille Kingdom, located in the Akuku-Toru Local Government Area. This funding is part of urgent measures to alleviate the severe impacts of ongoing gas emissions that have plagued the community since November 2025, raising significant environmental and health concerns.

Immediate Relief and Government Commitment

During a working visit to the affected area on Wednesday, the governor, represented by Secretary to the State Government Dagogo Wokoma, assured residents of the government's dedication to resolving the crisis. The N100 million support is designated to provide critical relief, including access to potable water and essential medical services for those affected by the environmental hazard.

Wokoma emphasized that Governor Fubara is deeply troubled by the health and wellbeing of the people and is focused on addressing the root causes of the emissions. "Although the governor could not be physically present due to other state engagements, he is fully briefed on the situation and remains committed to finding a lasting solution," he stated.

Temporary Palliative and Long-Term Efforts

The state government clarified that the financial aid serves as a temporary palliative, with ongoing efforts aimed at achieving a permanent resolution to the environmental challenge. Fubara urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding, promising sustained government intervention to mitigate the effects of the gas seepage.

Community Concerns and Inspection

Earlier during the visit, Chief Bennet Dokubo, Chairman of the Council of Chiefs in Bille Kingdom, praised Governor Fubara for his responsiveness. However, he expressed grave concerns over the severity of the emissions, highlighting the serious health risks posed to residents. "If you go to the river, the entire environment is bubbling and emitting strong odour. This is something strange we have never experienced before, and it is dangerous to human health," Dokubo remarked.

The governor's delegation conducted inspections of the affected sites, underscoring the urgency of the situation. The persistent gas emissions have contaminated land and water sources, creating an environmental emergency that requires immediate and sustained action.
