The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a significant increase in the average retail price of Household Kerosene (NHK) in Nigeria, rising by 22.49% year-on-year to N2,976.94 per litre in April 2026. This marks a sharp jump from N2,430.38 recorded in March 2026 and a 34.12% increase compared to N2,219.69 in April 2025.
Kerosene Price per Gallon Also Rises
Consumers paid an average of N13,396.23 per gallon of household kerosene in April 2026, up from N10,936.71 in March 2026. On a year-on-year basis, the price per gallon surged by 61.50% from N8,294.98 in April 2025. The NBS released these figures in its price watch report on Monday, June 1, 2026.
State-by-State Analysis of Kerosene Prices
An analysis by state reveals that Sokoto recorded the highest average price per litre at N3,965.10, followed by Kebbi at N3,808.75 and Lagos at N3,790.90. On the other hand, Bayelsa had the lowest average price at N1,815.40 per litre, with Kogi and Yobe also recording relatively low prices at N1,982.02 and N2,235.77, respectively.

Zonal Analysis of Kerosene Prices
On a zonal level, the North-West zone recorded the highest average price per litre of kerosene at N3,437.15, followed by the North-East at N2,987.65. The South-East zone had the lowest average price at N2,674.61 per litre. Similarly, the North-West zone also had the highest average price per gallon at N15,467.16, while the South-East recorded the lowest at N12,035.73.
Context: Petrol Prices Also on the Rise
Earlier reports from Legit.ng indicated that the NBS revealed the average retail price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, stood at N1,288.54 in March 2026. This represents a 2.13% increase compared to N1,261.65 in March 2025. On a month-on-month basis, the price rose by 22.55% from N1,051.47 in February 2026.
