OceanHub Africa and The Coca-Cola Foundation Launch $120K Pan-African Plastic Waste Challenge
OceanHub Africa (OHA), in collaboration with The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF), has unveiled a $120,000 pan-African challenge aimed at discovering bold, science-driven ideas to combat plastic waste across the continent. This initiative, titled the Call for Bold Ideas in Plastic Circularity, targets scientists, innovators, and startups, seeking scalable solutions that can transform promising concepts into impactful actions.
Addressing Africa's Plastic Pollution Crisis
The initiative responds to the escalating plastic pollution crisis by accelerating the development of solutions and business models that can move from the idea phase to viable market implementations. By doing so, it aims to collectively recycle 490 tons of plastic waste and generate over 150 sustainable livelihoods within coastal and urban communities in Africa.
Bridging the Gap from Concept to Market
OceanHub Africa's Call for Bold Ideas is designed to bridge the gap between early-stage concepts and market-ready solutions through its in-house venture builder framework. The program will provide up to $120,000 in funding for selected projects to facilitate initial scaling. Additionally, it offers technical support and business mentorship to guide ventures toward commercialization, while facilitating connections to market entry networks and corporate partners for growth. The initiative sets measurable impact goals, targeting the recycling of 490 tons of plastic and the creation of over 150 livelihoods.
Leadership Perspectives on the Initiative
Herland Cerveaux, Managing Director of OceanHub Africa, emphasized the importance of turning research into scalable businesses. "At OceanHub Africa, we're focused on ensuring groundbreaking solutions don't stay locked in research but are developed into scalable businesses that deliver meaningful results," he said. "This partnership with The Coca-Cola Foundation will provide vital resources and networks to help innovators achieve market readiness and impact."
Jeff Denby, Senior Director of Recycling Value Chains at The Coca-Cola Foundation, highlighted the dual focus on environmental and economic benefits. "Through this initiative, we prioritize preserving ecosystems while supporting ventures that can deliver economic inclusion. We believe empowering locally-driven ideas with financial backing and guidance positions African innovations to make a significant impact."
Urgent Need for Scalable Solutions
By 2030, Africa's solid waste output is projected to exceed 200 million tons annually, with plastic being a major concern. The effects of the plastic crisis disproportionately affect the continent, making scalable waste management solutions a pressing necessity. This challenge leverages science, innovation, and entrepreneurship to address these issues effectively.
How to Apply
Applications for the Call for Bold Ideas in Plastic Circularity are open until 15 February 2026 at 23:59 SAST. Innovators, startups, and researchers are encouraged to submit their ideas to contribute to a more sustainable future for Africa. This initiative represents a critical step in driving practical, scalable solutions to the continent's mounting waste challenges.
