The Rural Electrification Agency (REA) has signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Nigerian Commodity Exchange (NCX) and the Young Innovators of Nigeria (YIN) to expand clean energy deployment, strengthen agro-industrial productivity, and accelerate innovation-led economic development across the country.
These agreements underscore the agency's widening mandate beyond rural electricity access, positioning it as a central platform for productive use infrastructure, industrial growth, innovation ecosystems, and sustainable economic transformation.
Partnership with NCX
The first MoU, signed between REA and the Nigerian Commodity Exchange, establishes a National Collaborative Framework for Agro-Industrial Cluster Development, Renewable Energy Deployment, and Commodity Trade Formalisation across Nigeria. This initiative aligns with the Federal Government's food security agenda.
The NCX, a Federal Government-backed institution responsible for facilitating structured and transparent commodity trading, will work with REA to integrate renewable energy solutions into agricultural value chains nationwide. Under the partnership, both institutions will develop a scalable model linking solar-powered energy systems to commodity aggregation centres, processing facilities, storage infrastructure, trading hubs, and export channels.
The initiative is expected to reduce post-harvest losses, improve value retention in agricultural produce, strengthen food security, enhance rural industrialisation, and support growth in non-oil foreign exchange earnings. It also reflects a growing policy consensus that energy access and agricultural productivity are closely linked pillars of national economic development.
Partnership with YIN
The second MoU was signed between REA and the Young Innovators of Nigeria (YIN) for the co-hosting and joint implementation of the Technology Ecosystem Dialogue (TED). This national platform focuses on clean energy, digital transformation, smart mobility, and innovation policy.
YIN, which supports young people, women, startups, and persons with disabilities through digital skills training, innovation, and entrepreneurship programmes, has reached over 30,000 beneficiaries nationwide. The TED initiative will serve as an annual multi-stakeholder platform for policy dialogue, exhibitions, hackathons, stakeholder engagement, and implementation of outcomes designed to strengthen Nigeria's innovation ecosystem.
Under the agreement, REA will provide institutional backing and technical expertise to strengthen clean energy and sustainability components, while also participating in exhibitions, policy sessions, and implementation of key outcomes from the dialogue. The collaboration is expected to deepen discussions around the intersection of renewable energy, emerging technologies, entrepreneurship, youth development, and sustainable infrastructure systems in Nigeria.
Commitment to Integrated Development
Speaking on the partnerships, the REA reaffirmed its commitment to building integrated development ecosystems capable of driving inclusive economic growth, productive enterprise, innovation, and sustainable livelihoods. The agency said the agreements reflect its evolving role in connecting renewable energy deployment with broader national priorities, including food security, industrialisation, innovation, youth empowerment, and economic resilience.
REA added that as Nigeria advances its energy transition and economic diversification agenda, strategic partnerships such as these will be critical in unlocking long-term impact across key sectors of development.
