Governor Aliyu Urges Aviation Ministry to Fix Sokoto Airport Lighting for Hajj Airlift
Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has made an urgent appeal to the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development to address the deficient aviation lighting system at Sultan Abubakar III International Airport in Sokoto. This call comes ahead of the forthcoming 2026 Hajj airlift operations, which are critical for pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land.
Critical Challenge for Night Operations
During a courtesy visit to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, in Abuja, Governor Aliyu highlighted the airport's inadequate lighting as a serious operational challenge. He emphasized that this issue particularly hampers smooth activities during night hours, which is when most Hajj flights are scheduled to depart.
"We are concerned about the lack of a functional lighting system at Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, especially as Hajj operations approach," Governor Aliyu stated. "Most of our flights to the Holy Land usually depart at night, and unless this issue is resolved, such operations may face serious difficulties."
The governor, through a statement by the Director General of Media and Publicity at the Government House in Sokoto, Abubakar Bawa, pointed out that the state is losing significant economic opportunities due to airlines' inability to land at night. This limitation stems directly from the poor lighting infrastructure at the airport.
Minister's Assurance and Commendation
In response, Minister Festus Keyamo assured Governor Aliyu that the ministry would tackle the lighting challenges with urgency. He committed to ensuring that the airport operates effectively both during the day and at night, which is essential for the upcoming Hajj airlift and general aviation activities.
The minister also praised Governor Aliyu for his proactive efforts in enhancing the airport's facilities. Keyamo specifically acknowledged several state-executed projects that have significantly improved operations at Sultan Abubakar III International Airport. These projects include:
- The construction of the airport road
- The provision of a modern Hajj terminal
- The beautification of the airport road
- The ongoing construction of a VIP lounge
Keyamo thanked the governor for his dedication to airport development and reiterated the ministry's resolve to maintain federal airports as efficient and effective national assets.
Accompanied by Key Officials
Governor Aliyu was accompanied on this important visit by the Secretary to the State Government, Muhammad Bello Sifawa, and the Chief of Staff at the Government House in Sokoto, Aminu Haliru Dikko. Also present at the meeting were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mahmoud Adam Kambari, and the Managing Director of the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency, Engineer Faruk Ahmed.
This collaborative meeting underscores the shared commitment between state and federal authorities to address aviation infrastructure challenges, particularly in preparation for major events like the Hajj airlift. The resolution of the lighting issue is expected to boost the airport's capacity and enhance safety for all users.
