Lagos Airport Resumes Operations After Fire Outbreak; Three International Flights Diverted
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has officially confirmed the reopening of the airspace at Terminal One of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, following a significant fire incident that occurred earlier this week. This announcement comes after a period of temporary disruption to airport activities, which has now been resolved with safety as the paramount concern.
Emergency Response and Safety Measures
In a detailed statement provided to journalists on Monday, FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, emphasized that no lives were lost during the fire outbreak, although six individuals sustained injuries. She highlighted that the priority was to contain the fire and ensure the safety of all occupants, which was achieved through immediate activation of emergency procedures.
"Our priority was to contain the fire and ensure everyone's safety. Emergency procedures were immediately activated, and all occupants were evacuated without any fatalities due to the coordinated response of all relevant agencies," Kuku stated. She added that the airport's Emergency Operations Centre was promptly activated under the leadership of the airport manager, who serves as the Chief Safety and Security Officer, in strict adherence to established emergency protocols.
Flight Disruptions and Diversions
As a precautionary measure, three international flights operated by major carriers—Emirates, British Airways, and Lufthansa—were diverted. Kuku explained that while some airport operations were temporarily disrupted, normal activities were expected to resume shortly. She noted that most flight operations have been relocated, with departures largely moved to Terminal Two to minimize further inconvenience to passengers.
Additionally, four airlines are anticipated to begin operating from a temporary terminal facility, which Kuku described as ready for use within days. This move aims to ensure continuity of services while assessments and repairs are conducted at the affected terminal.
Investigation and Structural Assessment
Investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing, with preliminary findings suggesting that the blaze originated from the ground floor. Authorities are awaiting final confirmation before releasing an official report. Kuku clarified that although renovation projects are ongoing at the airport, no construction activity was taking place in the section where the fire is believed to have started.
The fire reportedly spread to the roof at some point, necessitating support from police and helicopter units to assist in rescue efforts. In response, civil and structural engineers have been engaged to assess the integrity of the building and determine the next course of action, ensuring that all safety standards are met before full operations are restored.
Coordinated Response and Future Precautions
FAAN, in close collaboration with first responders and partner emergency agencies, mounted a swift and coordinated response to the fire incident. This included an intense deployment of firefighting vehicles and rescue equipment to manage the situation effectively. Despite lingering smoke in some areas, Kuku assured passengers that firefighting teams would remain on standby as a safety measure, providing ongoing monitoring and support.
