Nigeria Commits $500 Million Cash Investment for Lagos Airport Modernization
The Federal Government of Nigeria has made a substantial cash investment of approximately $500 million to modernize the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos. This significant financial commitment was announced by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the Aircraft Acquisition and Investment Summit held in Lagos on Wednesday, April 1.
Strategic Investment in Aviation Infrastructure
Minister Keyamo emphasized that the scale of this investment reflects Nigeria's ambitious plan to strengthen its aviation infrastructure and position Lagos as a leading continental gateway. The $500 million allocation represents a direct cash injection from the government, with no borrowing involved, as confirmed by the minister. He stated that President Bola Tinubu personally authorized the release of these funds, demonstrating the administration's prioritization of aviation development.
"The scale of Nigeria's aviation opportunity is perhaps best illustrated by what is now happening in Lagos," Keyamo declared. "With roughly half a billion dollars invested by the Nigerian government in the modernization of Lagos International Airport infrastructure, we are making a clear statement that the gateway serving one of Africa's most important aviation markets must match the scale of its responsibility."
Project Timeline and Broader Airport Development
The comprehensive modernization project has already commenced, with contractors mobilized to the site. Keyamo expressed confidence that the redevelopment will be completed within a 22-month timeframe. "You will be very proud of what you see at Lagos airport in the next 22 months because that is the time allocated for delivery," he assured stakeholders.
The minister also revealed broader airport development plans beyond Lagos:
- The Federal Executive Council has approved the MMIA modernization project, valued at ₦712 billion
- The project represents a complete overhaul rather than routine upgrades
- Following the Lagos project, attention will shift to other airports
- President Tinubu has approved the resumption of construction for Abuja's second runway
"Work had been halted due to volatility in the Niger, but construction will resume immediately, and the second runway in Abuja will be ready in no time," Keyamo announced, marking the first public disclosure of this development.
Current Airport Configuration and Future Plans
Lagos currently operates with a single major international airport, MMIA, which comprises multiple terminals:
- MMA1, operated by the government, handles international flights
- MMA2, a privately owned facility, primarily serves domestic routes
- A recently commissioned international terminal features modern amenities including self-check-in counters
Beyond the immediate modernization efforts, plans are advancing for the proposed Lekki International Airport. This new facility is intended to support growing demand from the Lekki Free Trade Zone and surrounding residential developments, potentially easing congestion at MMIA in the future.
Safety Concerns Accelerating Redevelopment
The urgency of the airport modernization has been underscored by recent safety incidents. In late February 2026, a fire at Terminal 1 of the old international wing caused significant damage. The blaze, reportedly originating from the IT server room, spread rapidly and damaged key communication systems operated by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.
The incident resulted in:
- Fourteen people rescued, including 12 air traffic controllers
- Six individuals sustaining minor injuries
- Temporary shutdown of the airfield
- Diversion of flights to Abuja
Following this emergency, Minister Keyamo ordered the demolition of the affected terminal, accelerating reconstruction plans as part of the broader modernization initiative. This decisive action demonstrates the government's commitment to addressing infrastructure vulnerabilities while pursuing long-term aviation development goals.
