Nigeria to Launch Digital TV Platform with 100 Free Channels on June 17
Nigeria Launches Digital TV with 100 Free Channels June 17

The federal government of Nigeria has announced the launch of its digital switchover (DSO) platform on June 17, 2026, offering viewers over 100 free-to-air television channels. This move marks a significant milestone in the country's transition from analogue to digital broadcasting.

Minister Confirms Launch Date

Mohammed Idris, the minister of information and national orientation, revealed the launch date during a visit to the headquarters of Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited on Wednesday, May 13. He stated that the long-awaited migration from analogue to digital television broadcasting has finally been achieved under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Reforms in the Broadcast Sector

Idris noted that the project is part of broader reforms across various sectors. He said, "The promise that the president has made that he's going to reform every sector, you can see the reform here within the broadcast sector." He recalled that Nigerians had struggled with the DSO concept for many years, but now the transition has been completed and will be commissioned on June 17.

Enhanced Broadcasting Quality and Audience Measurement

The minister emphasized that the platform will deliver higher quality broadcast content and ensure widespread reach across Nigeria and sub-Saharan Africa. A key feature is the built-in audience measurement system that tracks viewer habits in real time. This allows broadcasters and advertisers to better understand viewer preferences.

Idris explained, "Now the science is here. If you are watching this station or another station, we are in a position to know exactly who is watching what and how many are watching." This will enable advertisers to make more informed decisions about which stations and programs are popular among different demographic groups.

Free and Accessible Service

The minister clarified that the service will be absolutely free for viewers. Unlike previous set-top boxes that were encrypted and costly, the new platform is free to use. Initially available in standard definition, it will be upgradable to high definition broadcast after launch.

Charles Ebuebu, director-general of the National Broadcasting Commission, added that the platform is designed to adapt to changing viewer behaviors and new broadcasting technologies. Over 100 channels are available at launch, with more broadcasters expressing interest in joining.

Regional Studios and Support Infrastructure

To support content production across the country, six regional studios have been commissioned. These studios enable content creators to develop and broadcast from their locations without traveling to major cities like Lagos, Abuja, or Kano. Additionally, a national multilingual call centre and a network of certified installers will provide support to subscribers nationwide.

Ebuebu stated, "Ultimately, we are going to create the market for Nigeria. We are having one market for Nigeria."

Satellite Expansion Plans

Jane Egerton-Idehen, CEO of NigComSat, confirmed the organization's commitment to ensuring uninterrupted service delivery and enhancing satellite capacity. She revealed plans to launch two additional satellites once President Tinubu approves the initiative.

Impact on Broadcasting Industry

The digital switchover is expected to create new opportunities for broadcasters, advertisers, and viewers. Better competition and improved content quality are anticipated outcomes. The platform will also extend the reach of television programs to previously underserved areas.
