Arewa Youths Applaud Court Ruling Upholding Pipeline Surveillance Contract
The Arewa Youths have issued a strong commendation to Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) following a significant ruling by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja. The court's decision upheld the continuity and long-term renewal of the nation's crucial pipeline surveillance contract, a move the youth group hailed as a landmark judgment that reinforces national economic stability and strengthens ongoing efforts to combat crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.
Court Dismisses Suit Seeking Contract Restructuring
Presided over by Justice Bello, the FCT High Court dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Registered Trustees of the People's Well-Being Association. The claimants had sought to halt and restructure the pipeline surveillance contract, including calls for its decentralisation. The defendants named in the suit included the Attorney General of the Federation, NNPCL, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PIN), and Abokus Integrated Security Services Limited.
The claimants had urged the court to grant an interim injunction restraining the Federal Government and NNPCL from renewing or continuing the surveillance contract. However, the court declined the application, ruling that granting such reliefs would be contrary to national economic interests and could undermine the progress made in securing the nation's oil infrastructure.
Youths Hail Ruling as Economic Victory
In a statement issued by Kabiru Yusuf, the Arewa Youths described the judgment as a major victory for Nigeria's economy and a clear endorsement of the effectiveness of the current surveillance framework. "The decision of the court is a welcome development and a strong signal that national interest must always prevail over sectional or politically motivated considerations," the statement read.
The group praised Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited for its pivotal role in drastically reducing pipeline vandalism and oil theft, noting that its operations have contributed significantly to improved crude oil production and revenue generation. They also lauded NNPCL and other security agencies for their collaboration and unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation's critical oil assets.
Rejection of Decentralisation Affirms Unified Approach
According to the Arewa Youths, the court's rejection of calls for decentralisation of the contract further affirms the need for a coordinated and unified approach in tackling economic sabotage in the oil sector. "The judgment has not only preserved an effective system but has also safeguarded the economic lifeline of the country. Nigeria's economy has clearly emerged as the ultimate winner," the statement added.
The group urged all stakeholders, including government agencies, private security firms, and community leaders, to support ongoing efforts to secure the nation's oil infrastructure. They emphasised the importance of avoiding actions that could undermine the substantial progress recorded in the fight against crude oil theft, which has historically drained billions of naira from the national economy.
This ruling comes at a critical time when Nigeria is intensifying efforts to boost oil production and maximise revenue from its petroleum resources. The Arewa Youths' endorsement highlights the broader societal support for measures that protect national assets and promote economic resilience against sabotage and criminal activities in the energy sector.
