UBA Graduates 720 Young Professionals, Urges Discipline and Excellence
United Bank for Africa (UBA) has successfully graduated 720 young professionals under its Graduate Management Accelerated Programme (GMAP), with a strong emphasis on embracing discipline, resilience, and excellence as they transition into the workforce. The graduation ceremony, which combined Cohorts 19 and 20 of the GMAP, was held yesterday, marking a significant milestone in the bank's commitment to developing future leaders.
Graduation Details and Programme Structure
The combined graduation ceremony saw Cohort 19, comprising 306 participants including representatives from other African countries, and Cohort 20, with 414 Nigerian participants, bringing the total number of graduates to 720. This initiative reflects UBA's strategic approach to building a pipeline of skilled professionals who can contribute to the bank's growth and the broader African economy.
Tony Elumelu's Charge to Graduates
UBA Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, addressed the graduates, urging young Nigerians to embrace hard work, discipline, and resilience as critical pillars for success, despite prevailing economic challenges. He highlighted that while fatigue and repeated failure may tempt individuals to give up, perseverance remains essential.
"There are times you are tired physically and mentally, and times you try several times without success, but the natural thing to do is to give up. I say no, don't," Elumelu emphasized. He pointed out that Nigeria's demographic advantage, with over 60 per cent of the population under 30, presents numerous opportunities for young professionals.
According to Elumelu, being selected for such opportunities already places beneficiaries at the right place and time. He stressed that discipline, the ability to stay committed to set goals, alongside resilience and relentless effort, are essential in shaping one's destiny and overcoming unemployment challenges.
Strategic Importance of the GMAP
The Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of UBA, Oliver Alawuba, described the GMAP as a strategic pipeline for developing the next generation of African leaders. He noted that with over 3,900 alumni from previous cohorts and hundreds currently in training, this initiative underscores the bank's long-term commitment to building capacity across the continent.
Alawuba emphasized that the programme is designed to equip young professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the competitive banking industry, thereby contributing to economic growth and stability in Africa.
Human Resources Perspective
The Group Head of Human Resources at UBA, Modupe Akindele, explained that the bank's graduate training programme is meticulously designed to groom future leaders through a rigorous and transparent selection process. This ensures that only the most capable and dedicated individuals are admitted, providing them with a solid foundation for career advancement.
Akindele highlighted that the programme includes comprehensive training modules, mentorship opportunities, and practical experiences that prepare graduates for leadership roles within UBA and beyond. This approach aligns with the bank's vision of fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
Broader Implications for Youth Development
The graduation of 720 young professionals under the GMAP is a testament to UBA's dedication to youth empowerment and professional development. By investing in such initiatives, the bank not only addresses skill gaps in the banking sector but also contributes to reducing unemployment and promoting economic resilience among young Africans.
This event serves as an inspiration for other institutions to prioritize similar programmes, highlighting the importance of corporate responsibility in nurturing the next generation of leaders. As these graduates embark on their careers, they carry with them the values of discipline and excellence instilled by UBA, poised to make significant contributions to their communities and the continent at large.
