Chief Ezekiel Ainabe at 80: A Journey of Grit, Grace, and Legacy
Chief (Dr.) Ezekiel Aikohi Ainabe marks his 80th birthday today, celebrating a life profoundly shaped by discipline, resilience, and decades of dedicated service in business and community development. This milestone is not merely about age but a testament to a remarkable journey that began in modest circumstances and evolved into a lasting legacy across multiple industries and communities.
Early Life and Hardship in Edo State
Long before his achievements in boardrooms, Ainabe was a boy growing up in Ujoelen, Ekpoma, Edo State, where life demanded resilience from an early age. The environment offered little comfort, with basic amenities almost non-existent. Families relied on pond water for all daily needs, including drinking, bathing, and cooking. Ainabe recalled, "We were using pond water to bathe, eat and drink. All we had was pond water." These experiences of hardship left a lasting imprint, shaping his empathy and commitment to community service later in life.
Education Against the Odds
Growing up in a polygamous household with seventeen children, education was a difficult privilege. Financial constraints forced Ainabe to step away from school temporarily. However, the introduction of free primary education under Chief Obafemi Awolowo in 1955 became a turning point. He returned to school, quickly distinguishing himself as one of the brightest in his class. This shift from limitation to opportunity laid the foundation for his future growth and success.
Professional Journey and Business Leadership
Ainabe's professional journey began in 1969 at Shell in Kaduna, where he was introduced to structured corporate practice. His career expanded steadily across diverse industries, including shipping, heavy equipment, automotive, oil and gas, agriculture, and financial services. Experiences at organizations like Halliburton and Landmark deepened his expertise, leading to the establishment of Kohi Engineering Nigeria Limited. As Chairman and CEO, the company specializes in oil and gas, 3D laser scanning, asset tagging, and marine services. Ainabe emphasized, "I believe in hard work and commitment to work," a philosophy that has defined his decades-long career.
Mentors and Influences
Throughout his journey, mentorship played a crucial role. Ainabe spoke with respect about Professor Ambrose Alli, whom he described as his godfather and mentor. Other influential figures included Dr. Olu Adekanbi Osidein, Dr. Ayo Adisa, and Chief Olu Oduforowa. Their guidance reinforced values of discipline, responsibility, and continuous learning, helping shape his professional outlook and resilience.
Turning Hardship into Community Service
For Ainabe, success was never an end in itself but a responsibility. Remembering the lack of clean water in his childhood community, he volunteered to lead a water project as chairman. He coordinated efforts to raise funds, ensuring transparency and accountability. "I led the whole exercise and gave accountability to the community. The papers are there," he said. This project stands as a lasting impact, demonstrating how personal experience can drive meaningful change.
Family, Relationships, and Values
Beyond business, Ainabe places strong value on family and relationships. He nurtures connections with his children, bringing them together every Christmas, and maintains long-standing friendships. "You cannot make life all about yourself. You must have friends," he noted, reflecting values of loyalty and meaningful human connection that complement his professional achievements.
Reflections on Nigeria and Future Outlook
At 80, Ainabe reflects on Nigeria with a measured perspective, acknowledging challenges like poor infrastructure, unreliable electricity, and insecurity. He stated, "It is certainly not the best; it can be better." Despite these issues, he remains hopeful, believing that deliberate action and responsible leadership can drive progress and investment in the country.
Lessons for the Next Generation
For younger professionals, Ainabe offers clear advice grounded in experience. He urges them to show interest in understanding various sectors and recognize that life progresses forward and upward. His journey serves as an inspiration, highlighting the power of discipline, hard work, and service to build a lasting legacy in Nigeria and beyond.
