A fire outbreak at the Ogun–Guangdong Free Trade Zone (OGFTZ) on Sunday was successfully contained with no loss of life or injuries recorded, the zone's management has confirmed.
Swift Response Prevents Major Disaster
The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday, 12 January 2026, at a section of Good Mattress FZE, a foam manufacturing enterprise operating within the industrial zone located in Igbesa. In a statement signed by Mr. Steve Makanjuola on behalf of the management, OGFTZ refuted claims that the fire affected residential buildings or was solely caused by a gas explosion.
The fire was professionally contained through the prompt response of OGFTZ’s internal fire service team, the Ogun State Fire Service, and other private companies with established working relationships with the Zone. This coordinated effort prevented the flames from spreading to other adjoining enterprises, effectively de-escalating the situation before it could pose a wider risk to the free trade zone.
Investigation Launched, Safety Reaffirmed
While the immediate danger has passed, the cause of the fire remains undetermined. “The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and verified findings will be communicated through official channels in due course,” Makanjuola stated. He emphasized that operations within OGFTZ are conducted lawfully and in strict compliance with all safety and regulatory provisions.
The management extended commendation to the relevant government agencies, host communities, and private companies for their cooperation during the incident. “This collective response emphasizes the importance of partnership, preparedness, and coordinated emergency management,” the statement read.
Police Involved, Public Assured
Following the incident, police authorities in Ogun State immediately swung into action to help bring the situation under control. The police have since begun their own investigations into the origins of the fire at the foam industry.
Makanjuola reaffirmed the management's commitment to upholding the highest standards of safety and operational integrity across all enterprises within the zone. The public has been assured that the situation is fully under control and that normal protocols are being followed to ensure such incidents are prevented in the future.
