EEDC Offers 25% Discount on Old Electricity Bills to Clear Debts
EEDC Gives 25% Discount on Unpaid Electricity Bills

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has rolled out a significant debt relief initiative aimed at customers with outstanding electricity bills. Announced on Tuesday via the company's official social media channels, the Accelerated Settlement of Arrears Project is designed to motivate customers to clear long-standing debts by offering substantial discounts.

Details of the EEDC Debt Relief Programme

This scheme is a refreshed and graded discount programme specifically targeted at customers who have accumulated arrears over time. However, the offer comes with strict eligibility criteria. Only outstanding bills incurred before December 31, 2022, qualify for the discount initiative. The DisCo emphasized that terms and conditions apply, and customers must meet specific requirements to benefit.

The discount structure incentivizes immediate full payment. Customers who choose to settle their eligible arrears in a single, lump-sum payment will receive a higher 25% discount on the total amount. For those who opt for a payment plan, a 20% discount is available if the debt is cleared through a three-month instalment arrangement.

Broader Context: Improving Revenue Collection in the Power Sector

This move by EEDC is not an isolated event. It is part of a wider, ongoing effort by electricity distribution companies across Nigeria to tackle the persistent challenge of unpaid bills and improve overall revenue collection. Efficient billing and revenue recovery are critical for the sustainability and improvement of power supply services.

The company has advised customers seeking more information or clarification regarding their eligibility to contact EEDC through its official communication channels. This is crucial as the debt relief programme is subject to specific conditions that must be verified.

Connecting the Dots: EEDC's Recent Metering Drive

This debt recovery initiative follows another significant customer-focused action by EEDC. In November 2025, the company distributed free prepaid meters to customers under the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission's (NERC) Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) programme.

That exercise, which was the second batch for the year, primarily benefited unmetered customers on Band “A” feeders across the South-East. The free meters, which included installation, were aimed at closing the metering gap in Nigeria's electricity sector and enhancing billing transparency and efficiency.

This metering effort aligns with a larger national push. Recall that in August 2025, the Federal Government began the distribution of 1.3 million free prepaid meters purchased under the World Bank-funded Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP) Metering Scheme. This intervention is vital given that current market prices for prepaid meters can range from over N133,000 to N219,497, depending on the phase type.

Together, the nationwide metering initiatives and targeted debt relief programmes like EEDC's represent a two-pronged approach: fixing the foundational issue of estimated billing while also addressing the historical backlog of debts that hampers the financial health of the power distribution sector.
