Oando JV Initiates Gas Supply to Bayelsa's 60MW Power Plant
In a significant development for Nigeria's energy sector, the joint venture between Oando Plc and NNPC Exploration and Production Limited (NEPL) has officially commenced gas supply to a newly commissioned 60-megawatt independent power plant (IPP) located in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. This initiative is strategically designed to enhance electricity availability and reliability across the state, addressing long-standing power deficits.
Project Details and Operational Framework
The NEPL/Oando JV serves as the exclusive gas supplier to the plant, delivering approximately 11.2 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. This supply is facilitated through the Elebele Valve Station, which is connected to a major trunkline to ensure a consistent and uninterrupted flow. The project was commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who emphasized its critical role in fostering development, noting that reliable power is essential for industrialization, skills enhancement, and overall economic growth.
Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, highlighted that the project was made possible through recent reforms in the power sector. He stated that it would significantly boost economic activity by providing more dependable electricity to both residential and commercial users, thereby reducing reliance on costly self-generation methods.
Expected Impact and Benefits
The 60MW plant is projected to supply power to thousands of households and businesses in Yenagoa and its surrounding areas. Key benefits include:
- Reduced dependence on self-generation, leading to lower energy costs for consumers.
- Improved voltage stability and minimized transmission losses due to its integrated design, which combines gas supply, embedded generation, and a dedicated distribution network located near demand centers.
- Enhanced resilience against grid outages, particularly in light of persistent challenges such as vandalism along the Owerri–Ahoada–Yenagoa transmission corridor.
This decentralised energy solution offers a robust alternative to the centralised grid, which has been plagued by reliability issues.
Technical and Strategic Contributions
The JV was responsible for the engineering design and connection infrastructure that links the plant to its gas network, in addition to providing technical support during the commissioning phase. This project marks an expansion of Oando's involvement in the power sector and aligns with broader national efforts to strengthen gas-to-power infrastructure and promote decentralised energy solutions across Nigeria.
Overall, the commencement of gas supply to the Bayelsa IPP represents a pivotal step towards achieving more stable and efficient electricity distribution, supporting economic development and improving the quality of life for residents in the region.
