The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully increased electricity transmission capacity in the Federal Capital Territory with the commissioning of a new 300MVA power transformer at its Katampe Transmission Substation.
Upgrade Details
The newly installed 300MVA 330/132kV transformer, which was commissioned on Sunday, raises the substation's total capacity from 450MVA to 750MVA. This significant upgrade is expected to enhance power availability for the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), enabling it to distribute more electricity to homes, businesses, and industries across Abuja and its environs.
Official Statement
Speaking at the commissioning event, the General Manager (Transmission) for the Abuja Region, Musa Shuaibu, emphasized that the project underscores TCN's ongoing commitment to strengthening the national grid. He noted that the additional capacity would support increased power delivery, improve grid stability, and enhance electricity supply to key load centers.
"This installation underscores our resolve to continue expanding the transmission network to meet growing demand and improve service delivery," Shuaibu stated.
Collaborative Effort
The project was executed under a collaborative initiative between TCN and the World Bank, aimed at rehabilitating and upgrading Nigeria's transmission infrastructure. This development comes amid broader efforts to address long-standing bottlenecks in the power sector, particularly constraints within the transmission segment that have often limited the evacuation of generated electricity.
With the new transformer in place, there are indications of improved supply reliability in some parts of Abuja, provided that distribution networks effectively absorb and deliver the additional capacity to end users.
