Elumelu Empowers 3,200 African Entrepreneurs on Birthday

Tony Elumelu Marks Birthday with Major Commitment to African Entrepreneurs

In a significant announcement that aligns with his personal celebration, Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, Chairman of Heirs Holdings and UBA Group, has revealed the selection of 3,200 beneficiaries for the 2026 Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) Entrepreneurship Programme. The declaration was made in Abuja, coinciding with the philanthropist's annual period of reflection on impact and purpose across the African continent.

Substantial Support for Emerging Businesses

This year's cohort, carefully chosen from all 54 African nations, will each receive $5,000 in non-refundable seed capital. Beyond financial support, beneficiaries will gain access to comprehensive mentorship programs, specialized business training, and TEF's proprietary digital platform, TEFConnect. This integrated approach aims to provide young entrepreneurs with the tools necessary for sustainable business growth.

In his annual letter, Elumelu emphasized the systematic nature of creating opportunity, stating, "Hope is not just a feeling, it is a system we can build." This philosophy reflects his long-standing advocacy for Africapitalism, which positions Africa's private sector as the primary driver of economic and social development across the continent.

Demonstrable Impact and Growing Legacy

The Foundation's track record demonstrates substantial results, with over $100 million disbursed to more than 24,000 African entrepreneurs since its establishment. Remarkably, 80 percent of supported businesses have successfully scaled beyond the early stage, significantly outperforming global averages for startup success rates.

Collectively, TEF-supported entrepreneurs have generated an impressive $4.2 billion in revenue while creating 1.5 million jobs across Africa. These businesses have lifted more than 2.1 million Africans out of poverty, positively impacting over four million households throughout the continent.

Women's Leadership in Entrepreneurship

A notable aspect of this year's selection is the strong representation of women, who constitute 51 percent of the cohort. According to Elumelu, this reflects merit-based selection processes while highlighting the increasing leadership role African women are assuming in entrepreneurial ventures.

"When opportunity is accessible, African women do not simply participate, they lead," Elumelu noted, underscoring the Foundation's commitment to gender-inclusive economic development.

Sustained Vision for African Transformation

Reflecting on the Foundation's journey since its 2010 launch, Elumelu reiterated the vision to democratize opportunity and scale impact across Africa by investing in its most valuable resource: its people. He expressed gratitude to partners, mentors, and stakeholders who continue supporting the Foundation's mission of building a self-sustaining Africa.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation remains the leading philanthropic organization empowering young African entrepreneurs across the continent. Through its flagship Entrepreneurship Programme, TEF provides comprehensive support including training, mentorship, funding, and network access, driving inclusive economic growth while transforming Africa's development narrative from aid dependency to investment and partnership.
