Dangote Refinery Expansion to Create 95,000 Jobs

The Dangote Group has announced plans to significantly expand its refinery capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day (mbpd), a move that is expected to generate approximately 95,000 jobs during the peak construction phase. This expansion will position the facility as the largest refinery globally, surpassing the Jamnagar refinery in India.

Expansion Details and Job Creation

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Group, revealed the expansion plans during his induction as an honorary fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering in Lagos. He stated that the company is committed to employing skilled workers, with a focus on Nigerian expertise. At the height of construction, the project will require around 95,000 skilled professionals, including engineers, technicians, and artisans.

The refinery, currently operating at 650,000 bpd, will be scaled up over the next three years. Dangote emphasized that the expansion underscores the company's dedication to engineering excellence, job creation, and sustainable economic growth.

Impact on Nigeria's Economy

Upon completion, the expanded refinery is expected to surpass the Jamnagar refinery, currently the world's largest, significantly boosting Nigeria's refining capacity. The project will stimulate local manufacturing, enhance technology transfer, and deepen the country's oil and gas value chain.

Additionally, the expansion is projected to improve fuel security, reduce dependence on imported petroleum products, and generate substantial foreign exchange savings for Nigeria. Dangote expressed confidence in Nigerian capacity and Africa's ability to build world-class infrastructure.

Recognition and Praise

Rahamon Bello, President of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering, praised Dangote's contributions, noting that his journey inspires a new generation of engineers and entrepreneurs to believe in Africa's potential. The academy awarded Dangote honorary fellowship in recognition of his industrial achievements.

In related news, the Dangote Group recently announced 60 new job vacancies across its cement, food, sugar, and other business units, offering competitive salaries and career growth opportunities.
