Southfield Petroleum Limited Commences Construction of Utorogu Gas Processing Plant
Southfield Petroleum Limited, an indigenous energy firm, has officially launched the groundbreaking ceremony for its new gas processing plant in Utorogu, Delta State. This significant event, held on Tuesday, marks a pivotal advancement in Nigeria's efforts to enhance gas utilization, ensure energy security, and foster economic growth.
Strategic Importance and Project Details
The Utorogu Gas Processing Plant is designed as a state-of-the-art facility with a planned processing capacity of 200 to 300 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD). It will produce essential outputs such as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), condensate, and autogas for both domestic and industrial applications. Engr. Pius Aigbomeikhe Bawa, Managing Director of SPL Utorogu Limited, emphasized the project's alignment with national priorities, particularly the Federal Government's "Decade of Gas" initiative.
"This project represents a major step forward in the Federal Government's commitment to gas commercialisation, reduction of gas flaring, and the advancement of Nigeria's energy transition goals," Bawa stated. He added that the plant will strengthen domestic gas supply, create sustainable economic opportunities for host communities, and generate employment during construction and operational phases.
Collaboration and Stakeholder Support
The project is being developed in collaboration with key industry stakeholders, regulators, and technical partners, ensuring adherence to best practices in safety, environmental sustainability, and operational excellence. The groundbreaking ceremony brought together government officials, industry leaders, community representatives, and partners, all reaffirming their support for the project's successful delivery.
Engr. Felix Ogbe, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), described the event as auspicious, highlighting its role in deepening Nigerian content and expanding domestic gas utilization. "This project reflects the board's commitment to promoting bankable investments that contribute to the economic growth of the Niger-Delta and Nigeria as a whole," Ogbe said.
Expected Outputs and Economic Impact
Upon completion, the plant is projected to produce approximately 123,000 metric tonnes of LPG annually, significantly improving domestic cooking gas availability and reducing reliance on imports. Mr. Ekperikpe Ekpo, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), noted that the facility will support Nigeria's transition to a gas-based economy by reducing flaring and converting resources into commercially viable products.
"The development of this facility will increase gas supply for power generation, boost industries, and improve energy security in the country," Ekpo affirmed. SPL Utorogu Limited remains dedicated to executing the project efficiently, with a strong focus on stakeholder engagement, local content development, and long-term value creation.
