FG, Sinoma Seek Tech for Affordable Housing Delivery

FG and Sinoma Forge Partnership for Affordable Housing Innovation

The Federal Government, through the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, is actively pursuing a strategic partnership with Sinoma New Materials Nigeria Company Limited. This collaboration aims to harness innovative technologies to significantly enhance the delivery of affordable housing across Nigeria. The initiative prioritizes the promotion of cutting-edge innovation, sustainable construction practices, and the local manufacturing of building materials, addressing critical gaps in the housing sector.

Focus on Home Ownership for Low- and Middle-Income Earners

During a high-level meeting held in Abuja, Minister Dangiwa underscored the government's unwavering commitment to ensuring that low- and middle-income Nigerians can achieve home ownership within their working lifetimes. He emphasized, "We want a situation where the average Nigerian worker can achieve home ownership with his salary within the period of his service. That is why we are particularly interested in innovation and technology that can make housing more affordable." Dangiwa pointed out that conventional construction methods have proven inadequate in delivering houses at the required affordability scale, especially for middle-cadre workers, and expressed openness to new construction technologies and materials.

Demand for Proven and Scalable Solutions

The minister stressed the necessity for demonstrable and proven effectiveness of any proposed innovations. "We can only fully agree with you if you have demonstrated this somewhere and delivered it at scale. People must be able to see and touch what has been built and understand its durability over time," Dangiwa added. He also highlighted the critical importance of construction speed in tackling Nigeria's substantial housing deficit, posing direct questions about project timelines to ensure efficiency and scalability in housing delivery.

Government Initiatives to Support Housing Development

Dangiwa outlined several government-led initiatives designed to bolster the housing sector:

  • Building Materials Manufacturing Hubs: The government plans to establish hubs across the country to support local production of innovative construction materials, aiming to accelerate housing development and reduce costs.
  • Public-Private Partnerships (PPP): Encouraging collaborations where the government provides land while private developers contribute technology, machinery, and financing.
  • Mortgage Financing: The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) can purchase completed houses on behalf of beneficiaries, paying developers upfront and recovering costs through mortgage schemes.

Sinoma's Commitment to Sustainable Construction

Sinoma New Materials Nigeria Company Limited, recognized as the world's largest manufacturer of building materials, specializes in eco-friendly, fire-resistant, water-resistant, and termite-protected materials. The company's chairman, Mr. Eric, commended the Federal Government's commitment, particularly through initiatives like the Renewed Hope Housing Programme. He affirmed full alignment with government priorities, focusing on delivering affordable housing at scale, promoting industrialization of construction materials, and encouraging innovation and sustainability in the built environment.

The minister has directed relevant directors in the housing ministry to continue engagements with Sinoma to refine proposals and ensure alignment with national housing goals, marking a significant step forward in addressing Nigeria's housing challenges through technological advancement and strategic partnerships.
