The Lagos State Government has announced that it has delivered 10,623 high-quality affordable housing units over the past seven years, with plans to increase the total to 14,022 units before the end of the year.
Commissioner's Announcement
Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, made this known during a ministerial press briefing marking the third year of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu's second term. The event took place at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre.
Akinderu-Fatai noted that nearly 3.4 billion people globally lack access to safe housing, with the worldwide deficit exceeding 268 million units. He highlighted a critical calibration in domestic housing data, stating that Nigeria's housing deficit stands at 14.925 million units, with an additional 15.2 million homes classified as substandard.
Expert Warnings
Experts have warned that the effective shortage could reach 28 million units within a few years if production rates do not accelerate.
New Projects Underway
Work has officially commenced on the newly awarded 176-unit Workers' Village in Ipaja under the Alimosho Local Government Council.
Supporting Bodies
The commissioner emphasized that the ministry's accomplishments are structurally reinforced by three sister execution bodies: the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC), the Lagos State Mortgage Board (LMB), and the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA).
Commitment Amid Challenges
Akinderu-Fatai reiterated that despite macroeconomic headwinds, the Sanwo-Olu-led administration remains resolute in its mission to turn the tide against urban homelessness and ensure dignified shelter for all Lagos residents.
