Arewa Youths Endorse Court Ruling on New Tax Regime, Urge National Patience
Arewa Youths Back New Tax System, Call for Patience

The Arewa Youth group has expressed strong support for a recent court ruling that paves the way for the implementation of Nigeria's new tax system, which officially commenced on January 1, 2026. The group described the judicial affirmation as a necessary step for the nation's economic future.

Court Clears Path for Tax Overhaul

This development follows a lawsuit filed by the Incorporated Trustees of African Initiative for Abuse Public Trustees against the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the President, the Attorney General, and the National Assembly leadership. The suit raised concerns over inconsistencies in the country's existing tax laws.

However, on Monday, December 30, 2025, the court delivered a decisive verdict. It directed the federal government, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and the National Assembly to proceed with the rollout and implementation of the new tax regime without further delay.

A "Bold and Patriotic" Decision for Economic Revival

In a statement released on Tuesday, December 31, 2025, the Arewa youths hailed the court's decision. They labeled it a "bold, timely and patriotic decision" that serves the nation's broader economic interests. The group argued that the ruling reinforces the rule of law and provides the legal certainty required for profound economic reforms.

The statement pointed to Nigeria's persistent economic struggles, which include:

  • Overdependence on volatile oil revenue
  • Weak internally generated revenue
  • Inadequate infrastructure
  • Limited fiscal capacity

According to the youths, a comprehensive tax reform is not just necessary but unavoidable to address these foundational issues.

Call for Patience and Collective Sacrifice

The Arewa youths acknowledged that the initial phase of the new tax regime may bring adjustments and temporary discomfort for both citizens and businesses. They emphasized, however, that these short-term challenges are a crucial investment in the country's future.

"We believe that the court ruling affirming the January 1 commencement of the new tax regime is in the greatest national economic interest. No nation develops without a functional and transparent tax system," the statement read.

They made a direct appeal to Nigerians, particularly young people, traders, and small business owners, to remain patient and supportive. They framed endurance during the rollout period as a "collective investment in the country's future," essential for achieving long-term economic stability, better public services, and shared prosperity.

Appeal for Fair Implementation and Non-Politicization

The group also issued calls to the authorities and other societal actors. They urged the federal government and relevant agencies to ensure the implementation process is fair, transparent, and people-oriented. Specifically, they stressed the need for protective measures to shield low-income earners and small businesses from undue hardship.

Furthermore, the Arewa youths appealed to political actors and interest groups to avoid politicizing the reform or inciting opposition against it. They warned that such actions could jeopardize national unity and derail economic recovery efforts.

"This is not a partisan or sectional issue. It is about Nigeria's survival and economic renewal. We must rise above narrow interests and support policies that serve the common good," the youths concluded.
