FG Launches New Tax ID Portal: Retrieve Your Number Online with NIN or CAC
New Tax ID Portal Launches Jan 1, 2026 - How to Retrieve

The Federal Government has introduced a groundbreaking digital platform that will enable Nigerian citizens and businesses to obtain their Tax Identification Number (TIN) online, eliminating the need for physical visits to tax offices. This initiative, spearheaded by the Joint Revenue Board (JRB) and the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS), is set to officially commence operations on January 1, 2026.

What the New Tax ID Portal Means for Nigerians

For years, obtaining or confirming a Tax Identification Number, a mandatory 13-digit code for official financial transactions, tax filing, and banking services, involved bureaucratic delays and physical verification. The newly launched Nigerian Tax ID Portal is designed to dismantle these barriers by leveraging existing national databases.

Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Policy and Fiscal Reform, has been at the forefront of explaining this seamless process to the public. The system aims to simplify tax administration, broaden the tax net, and enhance compliance by directly linking tax records to verified identities.

Step-by-Step Guide to Retrieving Your Tax ID

The portal offers two straightforward pathways for retrieval, depending on whether the user is an individual or a registered corporate entity.

For Individuals Using National Identification Number (NIN)

Starting January 1, 2026, individuals should visit the official portal at either www.taxidjtb.gov.ng or www.taxidnrs.gov.ng. On the homepage, select the "Individual" option and choose to verify via your National Identification Number. You will be prompted to enter your 11-digit NIN and click "Retrieve Tax ID."

The system will then request additional details for verification, including your first name, last name, and date of birth exactly as they appear on your NIN record with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). Upon successful confirmation, your unique 13-digit Tax ID will be displayed instantly.

For Businesses Using Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) Details

Registered companies and organizations will follow a similar process. After navigating to the portal, users should click on the "Corporate" tab, select their organization type, and input their CAC registration number. Clicking "Retrieve Tax ID" will automatically generate and show the Tax ID linked to that business entity.

Broader Implications for Nigeria's Economy and Compliance

This digital shift is a critical component of the Tinubu administration's broader agenda to digitize public services and implement more efficient fiscal policies. By integrating the Tax ID system with the NIN and CAC databases, the government aims to achieve multiple objectives:

  • Eliminate duplication and reduce identity errors in tax records.
  • Save time and cost for taxpayers, particularly small business owners and first-time filers.
  • Strengthen revenue collection by making compliance easier and more transparent.
  • Curb fraud and streamline regulatory processes across sectors.

As the rollout date approaches, officials are urging all Nigerians to ensure their NIN and CAC records are accurate and up-to-date to avoid any hitches when accessing the portal. This move is expected to significantly ease the burden of tax compliance and mark a major step forward in Nigeria's journey towards a fully digitized economy.
