Airtel Nigeria Temporarily Suspends Airtime and Data Credit Services

Airtel Nigeria has announced a temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, effective immediately. This move impacts eligible prepaid customers who previously could borrow airtime or data and repay upon their next recharge.

Uninterrupted Access to Standard Services

In a statement released on Friday, the telecommunications giant clarified that customers will continue to enjoy seamless access to airtime and data purchases through its existing channels. The company emphasized that this suspension is not anticipated to materially affect its service standards nationwide.

Ismail Adeshina, Director of Marketing at Airtel Nigeria, commented on the development, stating, "This is a necessary and responsible step as we align our operations with evolving requirements. Airtel Nigeria remains committed to the highest standards of compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while continuing to innovate responsibly within Nigeria’s digital ecosystem."

Regulatory Compliance and Industry Context

The suspension aligns with new regulations introduced by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC). Specifically, it relates to the implementation of processes under the Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025. This framework establishes a new compliance and licensing structure for entities offering digital or non-traditional consumer credit services.

Other telecom firms in Nigeria have also announced similar suspensions of their credit services in response to these regulatory changes. Airtel Nigeria has committed to providing updates on the status of the service in due course, ensuring stakeholders are informed of any developments.

The temporary halt underscores the company's proactive approach to adhering to legal standards while maintaining its dedication to customer satisfaction and operational integrity in the competitive telecommunications sector.
