The Borno State Government has announced a significant economic milestone, exporting leather products valued at $800,000 (approximately N1.2 billion) to international markets. This achievement is set to substantially boost the state's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and create employment opportunities in the 2026 fiscal year.
Major Infrastructure Projects Unveiled
Governor Babagana Zulum revealed the export success on Monday, December 30, 2025, while presenting a N890.33 billion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year to the State House of Assembly in Maiduguri. The budget focuses heavily on scholarship appropriations and economic development.
A cornerstone of this development plan is the establishment of a new industrial hub located along the Maiduguri-Damaturu road. This hub is designed to accelerate the completion of two critical projects: the Maiduguri Dry Port and the Banki Economic Trading Zone (BETZ). The BETZ will facilitate trade with neighbouring countries, including Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.
Power, Tourism, and Investor-Friendly Initiatives
To support the industrial hub and promote green energy, the government plans to install 5MW and 2MW solar power systems. These will also power upcoming Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations, initiatives aimed at mitigating climate change and environmental degradation in the state.
In a bid to attract both local and foreign investors, Governor Zulum outlined several key projects under Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) arrangements. These include:
- Construction of an additional modern market in Maiduguri metropolis to tackle youth and women unemployment.
- Upgrading the Alau Amusement and Recreation Park along Bama road to meet global standards for trade, commerce, and tourism.
- Rehabilitation of State Hotels across all 26 Local Government Areas, including the Lake Tila Resort in Kwaya-Kusar.
Budget Allocation and Logistics Support
To empower the execution of these plans, the Ministry of Trade, Investment, and Tourism has been allocated N20 billion for capital and recurrent expenditures in the 2026 budget.
Addressing logistical challenges, the state will construct four units of 120-ton capacity weighbridges along Biu and Baga roads, as well as at two other strategic locations. This move is intended to improve the condition of federal and state roads leading to neighbouring countries and enhance trade efficiency.
Governor Zulum's comprehensive budget and project announcements signal a strong pivot towards economic rejuvenation, infrastructure development, and sustainable growth for Borno State.
