In a significant move to elevate its status as a global business destination, the Lagos State Government has announced a strategic partnership with the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) for the development of a world-class convention centre.
Governor Sanwo-Olu's Pledge Through Deputy
On Friday, 17 January 2026, the state's commitment was formally declared. Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, represented by his Deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, made the pledge during a courtesy visit by the LCCI leadership to the governor's office in Alausa.
The chamber's delegation was led by its newly elected President, Engr. Leye Kupoluyi. Dr. Hamzat assured the business group of the government's full readiness to collaborate on this landmark project, which is set to be a game-changer for the state's economy.
Strategic Location and Multifaceted Purpose
The proposed facility is slated for a prime location along the burgeoning Lekki-Epe expressway, close to the Alaro City development. Authorities envision it becoming a central hub for a wide range of activities.
The centre is designed to host:
- Major international conferences and summits
- Large-scale trade exhibitions and fairs
- Business-to-business meetings and corporate events
This initiative is expected to significantly strengthen Lagos's position as Africa's foremost commercial and investment destination, attracting global events that have previously bypassed the continent.
Alignment with THEMES+ Agenda and Call for Coordination
Deputy Governor Hamzat emphasised that the convention centre project is a direct implementation of the Sanwo-Olu administration's THEMES+ development agenda. It specifically targets pillars related to:
Economic growth, job creation, tourism development, and enhancing global competitiveness.
He noted that such a facility would not only draw international visitors but also boost local enterprises, increase investor confidence, and reinforce Lagos's reputation as the centre of commerce and innovation in Africa.
While expressing strong passion for the project, Hamzat charged the LCCI leadership to deepen its collaboration with relevant state ministries, particularly the Ministry of Commerce. He stressed that clearer engagement and effective coordination between the institutions are essential to drive meaningful progress and ensure the project's successful delivery.
LCCI Commends Government, Eyes Continental Leadership
In his earlier remarks, LCCI President Engr. Leye Kupoluyi commended the Lagos State Government for its consistent support and for fostering an enabling environment where the private sector can thrive.
