Google Partners with Nigerian Creators to Launch Cultural Colouring Book Initiative
In a groundbreaking initiative blending technology with cultural preservation, Google has partnered with Slum2School Africa and prominent Nigerian creators to launch "Stories from Our Home," a Nigerian folktale and cultural colouring book specifically designed to support learning among children in underserved communities across Nigeria.
Creative Workshop and Technology Integration
The project was officially unveiled in Lagos on March 31, 2026, following an intensive "Imagination Workshop" where popular Nigerian comedian and actor Broda Shaggi collaborated with fellow creators including musician Falz and content creator Layi Wasabi. During the workshop, participants shared childhood memories, cultural stories, and traditional folklore that formed the foundation of the educational material.
The innovative aspect of this initiative involved using Google Gemini as a creative tool to transform traditional African folklore into printable line art suitable for children's colouring activities. This technological approach allowed the creators to translate rich Nigerian storytelling traditions into illustrations that accurately reflect the nation's cultural heritage while maintaining educational standards.
Distribution and Educational Impact
As part of the launch, organizers announced that 1,000 copies of the colouring book will be distributed to primary school pupils, specifically targeting communities where creative educational materials are often scarce. The final book was professionally designed and produced by Inked Memory to ensure all pages met both educational requirements and child-friendly standards.
Otto Orondaam, representing Slum2School Africa, emphasized the initiative's significance in addressing educational challenges. "At Slum2School Africa, we have always believed that education is the most powerful tool for breaking the cycle of poverty," Orondaam stated. "Learning often begins with the stories children hear and the creative materials they interact with, making this project particularly valuable for young learners in underserved areas."
Launch Event and Community Engagement
The formal unveiling took place at the Slum2School Innovation Hub in Lekki, where children participated in interactive storytelling and reading sessions. The event opened with Olumide Balogun reading a story about the Great Rivers of Nigeria, followed by guest readers Nancy Isime and Bisola Aiyeola sharing tales highlighting Nigerian historical figures and cultural icons, including Queen Moremi Ajasoro and the historic Walls of Benin.
Broda Shaggi expressed personal significance in the project, noting his own childhood experiences. "I know what it feels like to grow up without these things," he shared. "Seeing these books go into the hands of children means everything to me, as it represents both cultural preservation and educational opportunity for the next generation."
Comprehensive Learning Packages
Each child attending the launch received a comprehensive Dream Pack containing the folktale colouring book along with crayons, pencils, notebooks, and educational games. Organizers explained that the initiative aims to achieve multiple educational objectives simultaneously, including encouraging creativity, fostering cultural pride, and supporting the development of essential skills such as focus, imagination, and fine motor coordination among young learners.
The project represents a significant step in addressing the shortage of culturally relevant educational materials in Nigerian classrooms while demonstrating how technology can be leveraged to preserve and transmit traditional knowledge to younger generations.
