Nigeria has secured a prominent position as one of Africa's leading English-speaking nations, according to a major new global report. The country has been ranked the fifth best English-speaking country in Africa and the 29th best in the world out of 123 nations and regions assessed.
How the Global English Ranking Was Determined
The findings come from the 2025 English Proficiency Index (EPI) released by the international education organization, Education First (EF). This influential annual report is a key benchmark for adult English language skills worldwide.
For the 2025 edition, EF analyzed data from a massive sample of over 2.2 million test takers. These individuals all completed the EF Standard English Test (EF SET), which is recognized as the world's largest free standardized English test. A significant development this year was the first-time assessment of speaking and writing skills, made possible through the use of artificial intelligence technology.
EF emphasized in its report that English maintains its crucial role as a primary language for global communication, international business, and cultural exchange.
Nigeria's Position in Africa and the World
On the African continent, South Africa claimed the top spot, achieving an impressive global rank of 13th. It was closely followed by Zimbabwe, which also ranked 13th worldwide, tying with South Africa.
Kenya and Zambia took the third and fourth positions in Africa, placing 19th and 27th globally, respectively. Nigeria's fifth-place continental ranking and 29th-place global standing highlight the nation's strong command of the English language.
EF pointed out that Nigeria's high ranking is a direct reflection of the widespread use of English as the country's official language. The language is deeply embedded in key sectors including national education systems, government and governance, media and broadcasting, as well as in business and commerce.
