OPM Suspends Wedding of Pastor's Autistic Daughter Following Massive Outrage
Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere and his church, Omega Power Ministries (OPM), have officially suspended the wedding of his autistic daughter, Chiemeka Chibuzor. This decision comes after widespread public condemnation and calls for accountability regarding the treatment of vulnerable individuals within the church community.
Initial Announcement Sparks Controversy
Shortly after Apostle Chibuzor publicly announced that he was seeking a young, able-bodied man to marry his 21-year-old autistic daughter, hundreds of men expressed interest in the proposal. Many applicants sent messages and videos, pledging to love and respect Chiemeka, highlighting the intense response to the televangelist's call.
Public Backlash Intensifies
However, the move quickly ignited outrage among critics and the general public. Many warned Apostle Chibuzor that he would not escape scrutiny for marrying off a vulnerable woman, especially in light of a similar incident just two weeks prior. At that time, he had married his autistic son, Aboy Chibuzor, to an older woman who was reportedly offered financial incentives, raising serious ethical concerns about consent and exploitation.
OPM Announces Suspension
As the backlash grew more intense, OPM took to Facebook to announce the suspension of Chiemeka's wedding. The church stated, "Chiemeka Chibuzor wedding is hereby suspended. More than a thousand applications. No more wedding, Pending further directive from me HRM King, Apostle Chibuzor Gift Chinyere." This announcement came despite receiving numerous offers from interested single men, underscoring the church's response to mounting pressure.
Calls for Nullification of Previous Marriage
In addition to the suspension, many are now demanding that the wedding of Apostle Chibuzor's autistic son, Aboy Chibuzor, be nullified. Critics argue that a vulnerable young man who cannot communicate effectively is incapable of giving informed consent, raising fundamental questions about the legality and morality of such unions. This ongoing controversy highlights broader issues surrounding the protection of individuals with disabilities in Nigeria.
The situation continues to evolve, with public discourse focusing on the need for stricter safeguards and ethical standards in matters involving vulnerable populations. The suspension marks a significant moment in the ongoing debate over the rights and dignity of autistic individuals in the country.
