The process to select the next Awujale of Ijebuland has entered a decisive phase, with the ruling house confidently projecting that a new monarch will ascend the throne within the next month.
Nomination Process Concludes Peacefully
Speaking on Monday, January 12, 2026, the Olori Ebi of the Fusengbuwa ruling house, Otunba Abdul Lateef Owoyemi, confirmed the successful completion of the nomination stage. A total of 86 princes and princesses were formally nominated as aspirants for the revered stool in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
Otunba Owoyemi, a former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), assured the public that the exercise was conducted peacefully and harmoniously. He emphasized that the process now moves to the kingmakers, who will scrutinize the candidates and forward a selection to the state government for approval.
Assurances of Divine Guidance and Family Unity
"We have 19 days for anyone aggrieved to express their displeasure," Owoyemi stated, outlining the grievance window. He expressed unwavering confidence in the kingmakers, citing extensive traditional consultations.
"We in the Fusegbuwa ruling house have conducted extensive traditional research through the oracles... we have no doubt that the kingmakers will select the person the Almighty God himself has appointed, and our ancestors have also blessed," he affirmed.
Highlighting family cohesion, Owoyemi described the nomination as a "win-win for everybody." He noted that all nominees had signed an undertaking to accept the outcome, and he foresaw no post-selection litigation. "Even those who may not be appointed as the king will serve in the palace by the grace of God," he added.
Confidence in Government and Notable Nominees
The ruling house leader also voiced strong confidence in the Ogun State government's role in the final approval. "We know the government is going to do the right thing and support what the family supports. And God will guide them right... we know they will not make any mistake," Owoyemi said.
Among the prominent individuals nominated are:
- Fatai Arowolo of Aroon Construction Company.
- Biodun Onanuga, husband of the immediate past Deputy Governor of Ogun State.
- Dr. Kunle Hassan, founder of the Eye Foundation hospital.
The transparent nomination event was witnessed by government representatives, security agents, journalists, and other observers to ensure accountability.
Path Forward to the Throne
With the nominations sealed, the kingmakers of Ijebuland are now tasked with the critical duty of sifting through the list of 86 candidates. Their final recommendation will pave the way for the installation of a new Awujale, ending the interregnum and providing a traditional leader for the historic kingdom.
Otunba Owoyemi's projection sets a clear timeline, assuring the people of Ijebuland and the wider public that the succession process is on track to conclude smoothly and within a month, guided by tradition, divine will, and due process.
