The Idanre community in Ondo State has declared its ambitious plan to elevate its annual Ode Mare festival to a global event. This initiative aims to spotlight the area's deep cultural roots, foster unity among its people, and stimulate the local economy through increased tourism.
A Platform for Heritage and Unity
Speaking on the festival's significance, Lawrence Akinboni, the Aare Onakakanfo of Otoja in Idanre, emphasized that the event is more than mere entertainment. He described it as a vital symbol of shared history and identity for Idanre indigenes, both within Nigeria and across the diaspora. "The Ode Mare is a festival created to provide a platform for the Idanre Kingdom," Akinboni stated. "It is our way of appreciating God for the economic growth of the community. We believe strongly in our culture and heritage."
He further explained that the festival serves as an avenue to promote traditional values, indigenous music, and cultural dance. Akinboni projected that future editions would be more elaborate, signaling the community's commitment to growing the event's stature and reach.
Economic Diversification Through Culture
Another community leader, Olaleye Osunmakinwa, highlighted the dual purpose of the festival: reconnecting Idanre people worldwide and creating new economic pathways. "We do not want to rely solely on cocoa. We want our culture to generate income," Osunmakinwa noted. He pointed out that the festival is designed to attract global attention and call indigenes back home, fostering initiatives that bring progress.
Osunmakinwa stressed the need for unity and forward-thinking, stating, "Everything we are doing here is being watched globally. There are many things around us in Idanre worth celebrating, and this festival will boost our economy."
Government Backing for Tourism Drive
The drive to internationalize the festival has received official support. Akinwole Solomon, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, expressed confidence that the Ode Mare Festival would put Idanre firmly on the world tourism map.
This vision was echoed by the Ondo State government. The State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Afolabi Adesoji, represented by the Director of Tourism, Dr. Adeola Aderinola, affirmed that the festival celebrates Idanre's rich cultural heritage. The commissioner assured that the state government remains committed to promoting culture and tourism as key drivers for economic growth.
The collective resolve from community leaders and government officials underscores a strategic move to leverage cultural assets for development, setting the stage for the Ode Mare festival to become a landmark international event.
