The ancient city of Katsina is set to become a global focal point for Islamic devotion as it prepares to host the 40th edition of the Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass Maulud. The event, a cornerstone for followers of the Tijaniyya Islamic Sect, is expected to draw an unprecedented crowd of approximately four million faithful from across West and North Africa.
International Gathering of Faith
Sheikh Muhammad Hadi-Balarabe, the Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, made the announcement during a press briefing held in Katsina. He confirmed that devotees from 15 different countries will converge on the city for this spiritual occasion. The Maulud is being orchestrated by the national body known as “Majma’u Ahbab Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass.”
The theme for this landmark 40th anniversary is “Life of Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass, His Works and Contributions to Islam.” This theme underscores the central purpose of the gathering: to reflect on and honour the enduring legacy of the revered scholar. The event is firmly scheduled for January 17, 2026.
A Legacy Remembered
Sheikh Hadi-Balarabe provided historical context, noting that this grand commemoration was first held in 2002, again in 2016, and now returns in 2026. The primary objective remains to celebrate the immense contributions Sheikh Nyass made to the progress of Islam during his lifetime.
The chairman recounted the life of Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass, who was born in Senegal in 1900 and passed away in 1975. His scholarly work and devotion left an indelible mark on the Islamic world, particularly within the Tijaniyya order.
The Foundation of Devotion
Explaining the deep affection followers hold for Sheikh Nyass, Hadi-Balarabe highlighted the scholar's profound love for the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) and his strict adherence to the Prophet's teachings. “That is why followers of Tijaniyya loved him so much,” he stated, pointing to this unwavering commitment as the core reason for his lasting veneration.
The upcoming Maulud in Katsina is not merely a religious ceremony; it is a testament to transnational Islamic unity and scholarship. It serves as a powerful reminder of the spiritual and intellectual bridges built by figures like Sheikh Ibrahim Nyass, which continue to inspire millions decades after his passing.
