The Sultanate Council of Nigeria has officially called upon the Muslim faithful across the nation to commence the search for the new crescent moon of Sha'aban 1447 AH. This critical religious observation is set for Monday, January 19, 2026, setting the stage for the subsequent holy month of Ramadan.
Official Directive from Sokoto
The directive was formally issued through a statement by the Sultanate Council's Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs. The statement was signed by the committee's chairman, Prof. Sambo Junaidu, who also holds the traditional title of Wazirin Sokoto. This announcement provides the necessary guidance for millions of Muslims in Nigeria to begin their lunar observations.
Aligning with Islamic Tradition
According to the council's communication, the chosen date of January 19, 2026, corresponds with the 29th day of Rajab 1447 AH. In line with established Islamic tradition, this is the designated day for the moon sighting exercise that will determine the precise commencement of the month of Sha'aban. The sighting of the Sha'aban crescent is a pivotal precursor, as it allows for the accurate calculation of the start of Ramadan, the month of fasting, approximately 29 or 30 days later.
National Preparations Begin
This announcement triggers nationwide preparations within the Muslim community. Local moon-sighting committees across various states will mobilize to look for the crescent after sunset on the stated date. The outcome of this sighting will be reported to the Sultanate Council, which will then make a final declaration. The successful sighting and the subsequent beginning of Sha'aban are essential for religious planning, including spiritual readiness, charity (Sadaqah), and scheduling for Ramadan's intense worship period.
The Sultanate Council, under the leadership of His Eminence, the Sultan of Sokoto, serves as the highest authority on Islamic lunar dates in Nigeria, ensuring unity and consistency in religious observance for the country's large Muslim population.
