Fire Destroys Historic St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Taraba State

A catastrophic fire outbreak has completely destroyed the historic St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral in Wukari, Taraba State, leaving the local diocese reeling from what officials describe as a major setback for the community.

Timing and Suspected Cause

The devastating incident occurred on Wednesday night, March 4, 2025, with church authorities noting that the fire began shortly after electricity was restored to the area where the cathedral is located. Fr. John Laikei, Director of Communications for the Catholic Diocese of Wukari, confirmed the tragic event, stating that the exact cause remains undetermined but coincided with power restoration.

"I can confirm that it coincided with the restoration of electricity. I must also inform you that the authorities have yet to evaluate the extent of the damage caused by the fire," Fr. Laikei explained, adding that church members were still in shock over the sudden destruction of their place of worship.

Emergency Response Challenges

The situation was reportedly worsened by the absence of functional fire service vehicles in Wukari, forcing church members to watch helplessly as flames consumed the entire structure. This lack of emergency infrastructure highlights ongoing challenges in fire response capabilities within the region.

Pattern of Fire Incidents

This cathedral fire comes barely a month after a similar blaze destroyed the Wukari Local Government Secretariat, suggesting a troubling pattern of fire outbreaks in the area. Furthermore, Jalingo, the state capital, has recorded several fire incidents throughout January, February, and March of this year, during which:

  • Multiple shops were destroyed
  • A local market suffered damage
  • Residential houses were consumed by flames

The repeated fire incidents across Taraba State raise serious concerns about fire safety measures, emergency preparedness, and infrastructure maintenance in the region.

Church officials have described the cathedral destruction as particularly devastating given the building's historical and spiritual significance to the Catholic community in Wukari. As investigations continue into the exact cause, the diocese faces the monumental task of assessing the full extent of damage and planning for reconstruction while supporting traumatized congregation members.
