The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has organized a media literacy and journalism quiz competition for secondary school students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The event aimed to promote media literacy and revive press clubs in schools.
Participating Schools and Results
Students from Government Senior Secondary School (GSS) Garki, GSS Gwarimpa, Cedar Hall Academy (Lugbe), and Beautiful Beginning Academy (Abuja) took part. Beautiful Beginning Academy emerged victorious after a tie-breaker against Cedar Hall Academy, winning 8–6. Both schools had finished the second round with 205 points each.
In the first round, GSS Garki scored 70 points, GSS Gwarimpa scored 80, Cedar Hall Academy recorded 95, and Beautiful Beginning Academy led with 115. In the second round, GSS Garki scored 40, GSS Gwarimpa scored 80, Cedar Hall Academy scored 110, and Beautiful Beginning Academy secured 90 points.

Grace Ike, Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, stated that the initiative was designed to help students understand media operations and encourage schools to strengthen their press clubs. She praised the participants and urged teachers to sustain press club activities. “Teachers, please organise your press clubs and, once in a while, host events and invite the NUJ-FCT Council. We will come,” she said. She noted that the exercise promotes media literacy, mentorship, and community engagement among FCT students.
Yahaya Ndambabo, Coordinator of Press Clubs and Vice Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, said the program reflects the council’s commitment to promoting journalism, intellectual development, and responsible communication among young people. “The NUJ-FCT Council remains passionate about strengthening press clubs in our schools. Through these clubs, students are encouraged to develop critical thinking, communication skills, confidence, leadership qualities, and an interest in journalism and public affairs,” he added.
Attendance and Awards
Representatives of the Secondary Education Board, teachers, and other guests attended the event. Students described the competition as a welcome development and the first of its kind they had participated in. The event concluded with the presentation of awards and cash prizes to the winning schools by Grace Ike.
