LASUSTECH Researcher Calls for Climate Ambassadors to Boost Action in Nigeria
LASUSTECH Researcher Urges Climate Ambassadors for Nigeria

A researcher from the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Engr. Sheriff Babatunde Lamidi, has advocated for the establishment of Campus and Community Climate Ambassadors to strengthen environmental advocacy and climate action across Nigeria. He made this call during the 2026 World Environment Day celebration organized by the Nigerian Institution of Environmental Engineers (NIEE), Lagos State chapter, where he served as a special guest speaker.

Youth-Led Climate Action

Speaking on the theme 'Urbanisation and Climate Action: Building Resilient Cities for a Sustainable Future,' Lamidi emphasized the need for greater youth and community involvement in tackling climate change. He noted that climate change, flooding, environmental degradation, and waste management challenges threaten sustainable development, and lasting solutions require active participation from young people and local communities.

According to Lamidi, environmental sustainability should not be left solely to governments and professionals but should become a collective responsibility involving educational institutions, community leaders, and citizens. He stated: 'Climate action becomes truly impactful when it reaches our campuses, communities, and young people. We must intentionally develop environmental champions who can educate, influence, and mobilise others toward sustainable practices.'

Five-Point Framework for Climate-Resilient Cities

Drawing lessons from cities like Rotterdam (Netherlands), Singapore, and Kigali (Rwanda), Lamidi proposed a five-point framework for building resilient cities in Nigeria:

  • Plan: Develop climate-responsive urban planning and development strategies.
  • Protect: Invest in environmental protection and climate adaptation infrastructure.
  • Provide: Expand sustainable infrastructure and public services to support urban growth.
  • Preserve: Safeguard natural ecosystems and environmental resources.
  • Prosper: Promote green innovation, environmental entrepreneurship, and sustainable economic opportunities.

Community Support and Implementation

The proposal for Campus and Community Climate Ambassadors received strong support from participants, including NIEE Lagos chapter members. The chapter pledged to advance the initiative through collaboration with educational institutions and stakeholders. The programme aims to create a network of trained ambassadors across universities, polytechnics, colleges, secondary schools, and communities. These ambassadors would champion environmental awareness campaigns, sustainability projects, and leadership development.

Stakeholders noted that the initiative aligns with national and global priorities on climate action, environmental protection, and youth empowerment. It also highlights the role of higher education institutions in providing practical solutions to societal challenges. In recognition of his contribution, Lamidi received an Award of Appreciation and a Certificate of Appreciation from NIEE Lagos State Chapter.
