A determined student from Delta State University (DELSU) has successfully earned his degree after overcoming significant obstacles, including writing the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination twice. Usueyibo Onome took to social media to celebrate his academic milestone and share his inspiring journey.
From Medical Dreams to Engineering
Onome revealed that he once aspired to work in the medical field, dreaming of becoming a gynaecologist, paediatrician, or nurse. However, circumstances led him to pursue a different path in engineering. Although the decision was difficult, he did not disclose the specific reasons for abandoning his passion for medicine.
A Rocky Road to Admission
Reflecting on his academic journey, Onome recounted the challenges he faced after finishing secondary school. He wrote JAMB twice, scoring as high as 221, yet still could not secure admission. He then attended Ozoro Polytechnic for his Ordinary National Diploma (OND) before attempting to gain entry into the University of Benin (UNIBEN), which did not work out due to a poor post-UTME score. Eventually, DELSU accepted him, and that acceptance changed everything.
Struggles During University
Onome's time at DELSU was not without difficulties. His Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) dropped at one point, and he faced financial hardships, sometimes sewing clothes to survive. The loss of his grandmother in his early years at the university deeply affected him, but he persevered. He noted that while his 300 and 400 levels were good, his 500 level tested him thoroughly. Despite the struggles, his primary goal was to avoid carryovers, as he lacked the strength to repeat a level.
Social Media Reactions
Onome's Facebook post garnered widespread support and congratulations. Tariebi Moses Lakemfa wished him more heights in life, while Victory Nwobodo congratulated him. Eseoghene Mercy Eniobanke Ogbisi expressed pride, and Katherine Oghenefejiro praised God's role in his journey. Aforka Ifechukwu noted the shift from biology to mathematics and engineering, suggesting that perseverance might have led to a different path, but ultimately congratulated him on his victory.
A Story of Resilience
Onome's story is a testament to resilience and determination. Despite multiple setbacks, including two JAMB attempts, a rejected UNIBEN application, and personal struggles, he never gave up. His journey from dreaming of medicine to graduating in engineering, while facing financial and emotional hardships, serves as an inspiration to many. He borrowed strength from everywhere and ultimately emerged as a graduate against all odds.
In related news, another DELSU student who never had a carryover graduated as the best in her department, and a DELSU student who started a business in her first year also achieved top honors, balancing leadership and entrepreneurship with academics.
