President Tinubu Appoints Modupe Adelabu as NECO Governing Board Chairman
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially approved the appointment of Modupe Adeola Adelabu as the new Chairman of the Governing Board for the National Examinations Council. This strategic decision was announced on Wednesday by Bayo Onanuga, the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, through an official statement released to the public.
Strengthening Educational Leadership
The appointment forms a crucial component of a comprehensive series of approvals targeting key education agencies across Nigeria. The primary objective is to enhance governance structures, ensure continuity, and drive institutional reforms within the sector. President Tinubu's administration is clearly prioritizing the stabilization and repositioning of vital educational institutions to better serve the nation's academic needs.
Adelabu's Distinguished Background
Modupe Adelabu brings an impressive portfolio of experience to her new role. As a retired professor of Educational Administration, she has dedicated decades to academia and public service. Her career highlights include:
- Serving as Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, where she gained extensive administrative experience.
- Chairing the National Board for Technical Education from 2018 to 2021, overseeing technical and vocational education nationwide.
- Building a long academic career at Obafemi Awolowo University, rising from Graduate Assistant to full Professor before retiring in 2020.
- Leading the Ekiti State Universal Basic Education Board as Chairman from 2011 to 2014, focusing on foundational education.
Additionally, Adelabu has worked as a consultant for major education agencies, contributing significantly to policy development and reform initiatives in several states. Her multifaceted expertise is expected to bring valuable insights to NECO's governance.
Ensuring Operational Stability
In a move aimed at maintaining consistency, the Presidency confirmed that the current NECO Registrar, Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, will remain in his position. This decision is widely viewed as a step toward preserving operational stability within the examination body, ensuring that ongoing processes and reforms continue without disruption.
Broader Sector Appointments
Beyond the NECO appointment, President Tinubu approved several other key positions in the education sector, demonstrating a holistic approach to leadership renewal:
- Babatunde Salako has been named Chairman of the National Board for Technical Education.
- Idris M Bugaje has been reappointed as Executive Secretary of the same board for a second and final five-year term.
- Bongfa Binfa has been appointed Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam in Plateau State.
- Chinwe Veronica Anunobi will continue as Director-General of the National Library of Nigeria following the renewal of her tenure.
These appointments collectively signal a renewed governmental effort to strengthen leadership across Nigeria's educational landscape. Analysts interpret this series of decisions as a clear commitment to institutional reform and enhanced governance, which could lead to improved educational outcomes and greater public trust in these critical agencies.
