NASoW Lagos Calls for Unity to Address Growing Societal Divisions

NASoW Lagos Advocates for Unity and Collaboration to Heal Societal Rifts

As social workers globally observe Social Work Month and International Social Work Day in 2026, the Nigeria Association of Social Workers (NASoW), Lagos State Chapter, has issued a compelling call for enhanced collective efforts to mend the deepening fractures within society. This year's theme, 'Co-Building Hope and Harmony: A Harambee Call to Unite a Divided Society,' underscores the urgent necessity for individuals, communities, institutions, and governments to unite in fostering unity, inclusion, and overall social wellbeing.

Addressing Root Causes of Division

In a detailed statement, the Chairperson of NASoW Lagos State Chapter, Modupeola Sahid-Adebambo, highlighted that numerous contemporary social challenges are exacerbated by escalating divisions across various spheres of life. "Our society is grappling with multiple forms of division, ranging from family conflicts and political polarization to ethnic, religious, and social discrimination," she explained. "These rifts not only weaken interpersonal relationships but also severely impact the wellbeing of individuals and entire communities. As dedicated social workers, we firmly believe that cultivating hope and harmony demands open dialogue, mutual understanding, and a shared sense of collective responsibility."

The Harambee Philosophy in Action

Sahid-Adebambo elaborated on the theme's core concept, noting that Harambee, a Swahili term meaning "pulling together," perfectly encapsulates the vital role of collaboration in tackling social issues and reinforcing community bonds. To translate this philosophy into tangible action, the chapter has planned a series of initiatives throughout Social Work Month 2026. These include extensive media appearances and comprehensive school outreach programs across Lagos State, designed to elevate public consciousness about critical social matters and champion values such as unity, respect, and peaceful coexistence.

Strategic Outreach and Public Engagement

The media engagements will serve as platforms for social workers to delve into pressing social issues affecting families and communities, fostering informed discussions. Concurrently, the school outreach programs will focus on educating and empowering students with positive values that encourage understanding, tolerance, and responsible citizenship. "Through these efforts, we aim to instill a culture of empathy and cooperation from a young age, which is essential for long-term societal harmony," Sahid-Adebambo emphasized.

A Call to Broader Stakeholders

Furthermore, Sahid-Adebambo issued a robust appeal to government institutions, community leaders, civil society organizations, and all citizens to actively support initiatives aimed at strengthening family structures and promoting social cohesion. "Addressing the multifaceted challenges in our society requires a united front from every sector. When we prioritize empathy, respect our diverse differences, and extend support to one another, we lay the foundation for more resilient communities and a more peaceful society," she asserted.

Commitment to Professional Excellence and Advocacy

Reaffirming NASoW Lagos's unwavering dedication, Sahid-Adebambo stressed the association's commitment to advancing professional social work practices and advocating vigorously for the protection and wellbeing of vulnerable individuals and families. She encouraged everyone to wholeheartedly embrace the spirit of co-building hope and harmony, recognizing that sustainable social development is only achievable when societies collaborate for the common good. "By working together, we can transform divisions into opportunities for growth and unity, ensuring a brighter future for all," she concluded.
