A former resident of an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Edo State has achieved a remarkable academic feat, securing a place in a prestigious American university to pursue a doctoral degree. Ishaku Amos, originally from Gwoza in Borno State, shared his inspiring story of transformation during a recent visit to the camp that once sheltered him.
From Borno Displacement to Edo State University
Ishaku Amos described himself as a victim of the terrorism and insurgency that plagued Nigeria's North-East region. His life took a pivotal turn when he found refuge at the Home for the Needy Foundation in Uhogua, Edo State. According to Amos, the organisation played a decisive role in altering the trajectory of his life, providing not just shelter but a pathway to education.
His academic journey in Nigeria saw him complete an undergraduate degree at Edo State University in Iyamho. His performance there laid the groundwork for an even greater opportunity: a scholarship to study abroad. This achievement set the stage for his next big leap.
The Leap to a US Doctorate
In August, Amos embarked on a life-changing journey to the United States to begin a PhD program in Chemical Engineering at the University of Illinois in Chicago. For someone who had never travelled outside Nigeria and grew up in the North and later in a camp, this was a monumental transition.
He credited Pastor Solomon Folorunsho, the Coordinator of the IDP Camp in Uhogua, for providing crucial support. "I had never travelled outside Nigeria before," Amos recounted. "Having him accompany me made the transition easier and gave me confidence."
Overcoming Cultural and Climatic Challenges
Amos explained that adjusting to life in the United States presented significant challenges, including a new culture, a different academic system, and unfamiliar weather. However, the guidance he received beforehand was instrumental.
"I was guided on what to expect and how to adapt, so I didn't experience culture shock," he said. "He made sure I was comfortable before returning to Nigeria." This preparatory support ensured that the excited scholar could focus entirely on his doctoral studies, turning a daunting move into a manageable and successful one.
