According to an official statement released by the university's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026. Timilehin, a part-three student with matriculation number CLI/2022/133 from the College of Health Sciences, Department of Medicine and Surgery, died unexpectedly while asleep.
Preliminary reports from the university suggest the student might have passed away shortly after 2 a.m. This timeline is based on accounts from roommates, who indicated that the deceased was last seen alive when he opened the door for another student around that time.

The university administration stated it received the news with "shock and deep sorrow," describing the event as devastating for the entire academic community. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the university's Visitor, Council, Management, Senate, staff, and students.
