Afe Babalola Pledges to Transform Nigeria's Education Landscape

Founder and Chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to elevating Nigeria's university system to among the world's best. Speaking during the presentation of the Icon Man of the Year 2026 award by Triangle News International Magazine, Babalola highlighted education as the most reliable pathway out of hunger, poverty, and despair.

He articulated that ensuring access to quality and affordable education is essential for fostering peace, prosperity, and progress not only in Nigeria but across Africa and the globe. The award was received on his behalf in London by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Smeranda Olarinde.

Babalola's Personal Vision for Educational Empowerment

Drawing from his own experiences, Babalola stated, "As my personal story clearly shows, education remains the surest passport out of hunger, poverty, and despair. It has, therefore, been my lifelong desire and commitment to provide the same opportunity for transformative education, which Wolsey Hall gave to me and to millions of underprivileged people in Nigeria and across the globe." This vision underscores his dedication to replicating the educational opportunities that shaped his success.

President Tinubu Inaugurates Major Educational and Sports Projects in Lagos

In a parallel development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu inaugurated the remodelled Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle, Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Council of Lagos State. This complex, comprising 36 schools, is recognized as the largest in sub-Saharan West Africa, marking a significant milestone in educational infrastructure.

Additionally, Tinubu unveiled the Maracana Stadium in Ajegunle, featuring 19 mini football pitches renamed in his honor. Represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the President commended the Lagos State Government for its advancements in education, infrastructure renewal, and empowerment initiatives.

Governor Sanwo-Olu Emphasizes Modern Educational Goals

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, emphasized that the regeneration of the Tolu Schools Complex was designed to create a conducive learning environment for the 21st century. He noted, "Education is not just to prepare children to pass examinations in today's world, but also to prepare them to thrive in a changing world." To this end, the state government constructed a four-storey vocational and skills acquisition center with dedicated workshops.

This facility aims to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical skills, ensuring that students graduate not only with certificates but with employable and entrepreneurial capabilities. Sanwo-Olu urged students, teachers, and parents to maintain these new facilities to sustain their benefits.

Overcoming Challenges for World-Class Education

Hakeem Smith, Chairman of the Lagos State Special Committee on the Rehabilitation of Public Schools, acknowledged the overwhelming challenges faced during the project. However, he highlighted that the passion to deliver a world-class learning and teaching environment drove the team to create an all-inclusive school complex.

President Tinubu also virtually inaugurated the Fresh Food Industrial Hub in Abijo, Ibeju Lekki, further supporting economic and educational development in the region. These initiatives collectively reflect a broader commitment to enhancing Nigeria's educational framework and infrastructure.
