Clergy Urges Nigerian Youths to Pursue Self-Reliance Over Government Jobs
In a compelling address, Evang. Evans Sunday, the immediate past National President of the African Church Youth Association (ACYA), has urged Nigerian youths to shift their focus from overdependence on government employment to embracing self-reliance. Speaking at the 4th Biennial and 34th Annual National Youth Conference held at the African Church Cathedral Bethel in Abuja, Sunday emphasized the critical need for young people to identify and cultivate their talents, particularly in entrepreneurship and agriculture.
Call for Entrepreneurial Spirit and Skill Development
Sunday highlighted that waiting for government opportunities could lead to stagnation. "If we all wait for the government, nothing will happen," he stated. He encouraged youths to look inward, build their skills, and create opportunities not only for themselves but also for others. This approach, he argued, is essential for fostering economic growth and reducing unemployment in Nigeria.
Preparation for Leadership Roles
Beyond economic self-sufficiency, Sunday stressed the importance of youths preparing for leadership positions. He noted that meaningful political participation requires capacity building and financial readiness. "Youths must show readiness to lead by developing themselves. Leadership is not taken by force but by preparation and demonstrated capacity," he explained. This call to action aims to empower young Nigerians to take active roles in governance and community development.
Spiritual Growth and Grassroots Engagement
Sunday also urged youths of the African Church to embrace spiritual growth, entrepreneurship, and grassroots engagement as key drivers for the church's expansion and national development. He described the annual conference as more than just discussions, incorporating prayers, meditation, and teachings aimed at holistic development. According to him, the event provided a platform for young members to evaluate past efforts, share ideas, and develop strategies for strengthening the church's future.
Youths as Catalysts for Church Mission
The clergy emphasized the pivotal role of youths in driving the church's mission, describing them as the most active and capable demographic for outreach and expansion. He noted that beyond conferences, the church organizes annual conventions used as platforms for church planting and community impact. "As part of our outreach, we engage in projects such as medical missions and empowerment programmes, benefiting both church members and the wider community," he said.
Conference Conclusion and New Leadership
The conference concluded with the election of new national officers to manage the association's affairs. Oluwaseun Samuel Oyeyipo from Abuja Province emerged as the National President, Godson David from Uyo Province as Deputy National President, and Adeola Adekanmbi of Lagos Province as the General Secretary, among others. This transition marks a new chapter for ACYA, with a focus on youth empowerment and community engagement.
