Kano Launches 10-Day Census of Tertiary Institutions from Jan 14
Kano to Conduct Census of Tertiary Institutions

The Kano State Bureau of Statistics (KSBS) is set to embark on a major data collection drive targeting the state's higher education sector. The agency has scheduled a comprehensive census of all tertiary institutions to run for ten working days, from January 14 to January 23, 2026.

Scope and Objectives of the Education Census

Announcing the plan in a statement released in Kano, the State Statistician-General, Dr Suraj Sulaiman, outlined the ambitious goals of the exercise. The primary aim is to generate precise and current data on Kano's tertiary education landscape. This information is deemed crucial for effective planning and the formulation of sound education policies.

The census will capture a wide array of critical data points. Enumerators will collect information on:

  • The number and categories of tertiary institutions operating in the state.
  • Total student enrolment figures.
  • Academic programmes offered by each institution.
  • The state of infrastructure, including classrooms, laboratories, and libraries.
  • Staffing levels and the qualifications of academic and non-academic personnel.
  • The current operational status of each institution.

Critical Role in Planning and Development

Dr Sulaiman emphasized that the findings from this census will serve as a vital tool for policymakers, education managers, and other stakeholders. The reliable data will inform decisions on resource allocation and strategies to enhance educational outcomes across Kano State.

"The cooperation of all tertiary institutions is critical to shaping the future of education in Kano State," Sulaiman stated. He stressed that the data gathered will play a key role in evidence-based decision-making, moving planning away from assumptions to concrete facts.

A Call for Full Cooperation

The Statistician-General has made a direct appeal to all tertiary institutions within Kano to extend their full support to the trained enumerators and supervisors who will be deployed for the exercise. He noted that the success of this extensive data-gathering effort hinges largely on the willingness of institutions to provide timely and accurate information.

This census is positioned as one of the most significant assessments of Kano's tertiary education sector in recent years. It promises to deliver a much clearer picture of the existing capacities within the system and pinpoint the specific challenges that need to be addressed to move the sector forward.
