LASU Hosts Global Psychology Conference in 2026

Lagos State University (LASU) has announced it will be the host institution for a major global academic gathering in 2026. The university is preparing to welcome the world for the International Conference of Community Psychology (ICCP).

Africa's Turn to Lead Global Psychology Discourse

The conference is scheduled to run from August 28 to September 7, 2026. It will be held under the theme “Gathering in the motherland: Celebrating ways of the waters and reconnecting to the source.” The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, stated that the event aims to fundamentally change how psychology tackles systemic human development issues across Africa.

She explained that the conference represents a unique chance for African scholars and practitioners to make a substantial contribution to worldwide research and innovation in the field of Community Psychology. This branch of psychology examines how individuals interact with their broader social, cultural, economic, and physical surroundings.

Focus on Community Well-being and Major Partnerships

Prof. Olatunji-Bello emphasized that the focus will be on fostering well-being and driving positive change at community and societal levels, moving beyond interventions aimed solely at individuals. The event has already garnered significant institutional support.

Over 700 participants are expected to attend. The conference has received endorsements from prominent professional bodies including:

  • The Pan-African Psychology Union
  • The Nigerian Psychological Association
  • The Psychological Society of South Africa

Conference convener, Prof. Andrew Zanami, and Dr. Moshood Olanrewaju, confirmed the growing list of partnerships, underscoring the event's importance.

Lagos as a Hub of Knowledge and Culture

The Vice-Chancellor highlighted that choosing Lagos as the host city is strategic. She described Lagos as a mega-city known for its intellectual leadership, vibrant culture, economic energy, and innovative spirit. Hosting the ICCP here offers a perfect platform to showcase Africa's potential.

She assured attendees that LASU is committed to their safety and comfort. The university has arranged comprehensive security, transportation, accommodation, and entertainment packages to ensure a productive and enjoyable stay in Lagos.

The Local Organising Committee, led by its Alternate Chair, Prof. Temitayo Adewuyi, has appealed to multinational corporations, philanthropists, and interested individuals for support. This collaboration is deemed crucial for ensuring the successful hosting of this prestigious international event.
