Nexford University Unveils Transformative Fellowship Program for Young Nigerians
In a significant move to address Africa's educational and employment challenges, Nexford University has launched the NextGen Africa Workforce Fellowship. This pan-African initiative is specifically designed to equip young Nigerians and other Africans with globally competitive skills through an innovative combination of accredited online education and high-level mentorship.
Bridging the Gap Between Education and Employment
The fellowship arrives at a critical juncture for Nigeria, where youth unemployment and underemployment affect over 50% of individuals aged 15-34. With artificial intelligence rapidly transforming global industries, the disconnect between traditional education and workplace requirements continues to widen, creating an urgent need for innovative solutions.
"Africa does not lack talent," emphasized Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, former Vice President of the World Bank and Nigeria's former Minister of Education. "What we must build intentionally is leadership capacity. This Fellowship focuses on preparation, discipline, and responsibility — raising a generation that is truly ready to lead."
Prestigious Mentorship Network
The program's most distinctive feature is its mentorship component, connecting participants with some of Africa's most accomplished leaders and executives. The confirmed mentor roster includes:
- Dr. Oby Ezekwesili - Former Vice President of the World Bank and Nigeria's former Minister of Education
- Dr. Ameenah Gurib-Fakim - Former President of Mauritius
- Dr. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka - Former Deputy President of South Africa and former Executive Director of UN Women
- Chude Jideonwo - Media entrepreneur and thought leader
- Rinu Oduala - Prominent youth civic leader and activist
- Oluseun Onigbinde - Public finance advocate and transparency expert
These mentors bring diverse experiences from governing nations, leading global institutions, and building successful enterprises across Africa and internationally.
Comprehensive Educational Framework
The fellowship combines a fully online, U.S.-accredited Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree with structured leadership development. The curriculum integrates AI-relevant skills and digital capabilities, allowing participants to continue working while pursuing their education.
Fadl Al Tarzi, CEO of Nexford University, explained the program's philosophy: "This is not just about access to education. Africa is entering a defining decade. Talent is not the constraint — preparation is. As AI transforms industries globally, young Africans need both the skills and the exposure to compete at a higher level from the start of their careers."
Significant Financial Investment and Accessibility
To ensure broad participation, Nexford University has committed $5 million in scholarships to the fellowship program. This substantial investment reduces the monthly cost to approximately $60, making high-quality education accessible to talented young Africans who might otherwise face financial barriers.
The university's existing model has demonstrated impressive outcomes, with 97% of graduates either employed or actively advancing their careers. Nexford has built a strong Nigerian community, with thousands of graduates and a major Lagos graduation event in January 2025 that attracted over 1,000 participants and featured keynote addresses from prominent figures including Peter Obi and Bola Adesola.
Program Structure and Application Details
The NextGen Africa Workforce Fellowship is designed as a selective program with limited spaces available in each cohort. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with the first cohort scheduled to begin in June. The program emphasizes workforce-aligned outcomes, combining academic learning with real-world exposure through executive insights and leadership conversations.
Nexford University, accredited by the Distance Education Accrediting Commission, has established itself as a provider of flexible, affordable education tailored to evolving workforce needs. With one of its largest learner populations in Nigeria, the university has developed a reputation for delivering accessible, career-focused education that enables professional advancement.
The fellowship represents a strategic response to Africa's educational challenges, offering young Nigerians a pathway to global competitiveness through accredited education, leadership development, and career preparation in an increasingly digital and AI-driven economy.
