OAU Medical Student Dies in Sleep, University Mourns

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has been plunged into mourning following the sudden and tragic death of a young medical student. The university community is grappling with the loss of Timilehin Toromade, an 18-year-old Part Three student in the College of Health Sciences, who reportedly passed away in his sleep.

Details of the Tragic Incident

According to an official statement released by the university's Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olanrewaju, the devastating event occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, 6th January, 2026. The management stated that Toromade, with matriculation number CLI/2022/133, is believed to have died after 2 a.m.

Preliminary details suggest a roommate opened the door for another medical student living in the same building around that time, unaware of the tragedy unfolding. The university management received the news with "profound shock, deep sorrow and a heavy heart".

University Leadership and Community Reaction

The Vice-Chancellor of OAU, Professor Simeon Bamire, has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, his classmates, colleagues, and friends. Professor Bamire described the incident as "deeply painful and distressing."

In his condolence message, he emphasized the collective grief of the university, noting that Toromade had embraced the demanding path of medical training with the noble aspiration of healing others and serving humanity. "His passing has left a void in the hearts of his peers and all who knew him," Bamire said, adding that "the loss of a young life filled with promise, purpose, and potential is a tragedy that words alone cannot adequately capture."

Investigation and Support Measures

The university management has assured the public that it is working closely with relevant authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate death. This process will follow established medical procedures.

Recognizing the emotional impact on students and staff, OAU is also implementing appropriate support measures to counsel and assist those affected by this tragic loss. The management has called for calm, compassion, and solidarity within the university community.

"At this moment of collective mourning, we call on students, staff, alumni, and friends of the institution to remain calm, compassionate, and prayerful, and to uphold the values of empathy and solidarity for which the Great Ife is renowned," the statement concluded.
