University of Ibadan Engineering Graduate Celebrates Triumph Over Academic Hurdles
In a heartwarming tale of resilience, a young Nigerian man has captured widespread attention after successfully completing his engineering studies at the University of Ibadan. Emmanuel Okpara, who recently graduated, took to social media to share his remarkable academic journey, which included multiple setbacks before achieving his goal.
A Rocky Start to Higher Education
Emmanuel revealed that his path to university was far from smooth. After finishing secondary school in 2015, he sat for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) but faced disappointing results, including an F9 in Mathematics. Determined to improve, he rewrote WAEC the same year, managing to clear his papers with grades like C5 and C6, though it was a narrow escape from failure.
His quest for admission into the University of Ibadan proved even more challenging. Over four consecutive years, from 2016 to 2019, Emmanuel wrote the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with scores ranging from 204 to 271. Each attempt brought its own disappointments, including a failed Post-UTME in 2018, leaving him without admission and familiar with failure. During this period, he worked as a sales representative to support his family while watching his peers advance academically.
Perseverance Pays Off at University
Finally, in his fourth UTME attempt, Emmanuel scored 271, passed the Post-UTME, and gained admission to the University of Ibadan to study Wood Products Engineering. However, his struggles did not end there. He began his university life on a rough path, with a CGPA of 2.54 out of 4.0 at the end of his first year. Facing accommodation issues, he often squatted with friends or trekked long distances to lectures, studying in overcrowded and difficult conditions.
Refusing to give up, Emmanuel made a conscious decision to take responsibility for his future. He studied harder, stayed disciplined, and remained consistent, despite earning passes in core courses that slowed his progress. His CGPA improved gradually: 2.63 in his second year and 2.73 in his third year.
A Turning Point and Academic Achievement
The pivotal moment came in his fourth year, when Emmanuel calculated what he needed to graduate with a second-class upper division. Driven by this goal, he ended 400 level on the Dean's Honours List with a GPA of 3.86 out of 4.0. This success fueled his optimism, and he continued with grit into his final year.
In 500 level, Emmanuel aced all his papers, securing 11 A's and 2 B's, which earned him a place on the Dean's Honours List for the second time and a final CGPA of 3.12 out of 4.0. He graduated with a second-class upper division in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, and his final year project was ranked the second best in his department. On February 25, 2026, he was formally inducted into the Nigerian Society of Engineers as a graduate member.

In a LinkedIn post titled "A JOURNEY FORMED FROM FAILURE," Emmanuel reflected on his journey, stating, "From F9 in Mathematics… To writing JAMB four times… To graduating with honours. Failure did not define me. Persistence did." He encouraged others facing struggles not to give up, emphasizing that their stories are still being written.
