A Master's degree graduate from the University of Ibadan (UI) has opened up about her challenging yet eye-opening experience during her postgraduate studies in Oyo State. The lady, known on TikTok as @dahnellah, completed her programme in Communication and Language Arts in March 2026.
Graduate’s Struggle with Yoruba Language
Hailing from Abuja, the graduate revealed that her move to Ibadan for postgraduate studies was her first time studying far from home. She explained that her inability to speak Yoruba fluently made her an easy target for market traders who often inflated prices. To counter this, she relied on a friend proficient in the language to confront the traders and secure fair prices.
"Me, coming from a place where I don't really know how to speak the Yoruba language very well—I understand the Yoruba language well to some extent, but I have issues with communicating with people. So, it was in Ibadan I found out that these market people, actually, they will legit scam you of your money," she said.
Shocking Transportation Experience
The graduate also expressed surprise at Ibadan's transportation system. She recounted a heated argument with a commercial motorcyclist who wanted to pick an additional passenger. Unaccustomed to sharing a bike with a stranger, she ended up paying for two seats to avoid the situation.
"I didn't know that you have—when you are taking a bike in Ibadan, you are going to share this bike with somebody else. Because where I'm from, it's just you. So it was a shocker for me when this particular man said, 'Oh, he wants to pick another person.' So I was like, 'No!' It turned to a serious argument," she added.
Overall Impression of Ibadan
Despite the initial difficulties, she concluded that Ibadan is a calm place, though she warned that the university environment is not for the faint-hearted. Her post garnered reactions from social media users, with many congratulating her and sharing their own thoughts on the challenges she faced.
@HoneyBhee commented: "Congratulations baby ❤️❤️❤️." @LizEddy Home of Fashion asked: "UI and FUL which is more difficult academically." @kennyskraftcollection expressed surprise: "Two people on bike ? ah." @6ix simply said: "Congratulations. ?"
